2.0 out of 5 stars Auto Focus drives me crazy March 5 2011

I believe the camera would be an amazing find if I could figure out a simple way to turn off the auto focus capability. This auto focus changes the image and makes things blurry on a regular basis. Overall, great camera and software, but the auto focus makes it frustrating to use.

Very disappointed with this Creative brand web camera. The voice quality is really bad and I have to talk very close to the camera for other people to understand me, otherwise I think the noise cancellation feature is canceling out my own voice.

2.0 out of 5 stars The outdoor function doesn't work. March 17 2011

I bought this item and exchanged for another one, but both of them couldn't see anything when I took the webcam toward outside. My old Creative webcam VF0050 can do it.
I don't know why. What should I do?

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment -- get the Logitech C920 instead! Dec 17 2012
By David Tenser - Published on
I wrote this review for the Logitech C920, but since it compares it head to head with the Creative Live! Socialize HD camera I owned before it, I'm including the review here too:

I owned this Creative camera for about 6 months until I was lucky enough to upgrade from Windows to Mac, which this camera didn't support. Because the Creative camera had other issues (a weird circular spot that appeared in all photos and videos, likely a hardware/sensor/lens issue), I was able to return it and was on the hunt again for a better camera, this time preferably with Mac support.

I then turned to Logitech and I ended up in countless of angry threads online about the fact that the Logitech C920 didn't have support for Mac, something its predecessor the C910 had. Well, I ended up getting the C920 anyway because I didn't like the idea of buying the previous generation, and Logitech's own support reps on their site even mentioned in a thread that the support in C910 wasn't that great anyway. And everyone seemed to rave about the picture quality of the C9x0 in general, so I thought I'd take a chance.

And boy did the C920 exceed my expectations! Yes, there is no Mac support in the sense that there is no way to modify any settings like white balance, brightness, saturation, gamma, etc.... but the reality is, you don't need it. This camera adjust perfectly to *any* lighting condition! I've used this in daylight, during nighttime with an incandescent energy light bulb, and even in the darkness with the cold light from my big 24" monitor lighting up my face. Regardless of light source, the camera just adjusts perfectly and generates skin tones that don't want me to cover up my face in late night meetings with my colleagues overseas. The Creative camera made my face completely blue unless I had several lamps on in the room to compensate for the harsh monitor light.

Another thing that the Logitech does far better than the Creative is auto-focus: on my Creative camera, the auto-focus seemed to live a life of its own, and it often got stuck near-sighted. The trick then was to put a piece of paper in front of it and then suddenly remove it, (hopefully) causing the camera to re-focus. It worked about half of the times. The Logitech camera, in comparison, gets the autofocus right every single time, and focuses more quickly too.

So, although you can't modify any settings if you're on a Mac (no problem if you're running Windows), I can still highly recommend the Logitech C920 camera as it adjusts perfectly, and generally has stunning image quality. I do *not* recommend the Creative camera -- stay away from it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solving the Autofocus Problems July 18 2012
By Mat - Published on
This camera is excellent once the autofocus is disabled. The sound quality is excellent.

In linux the autofocus is hopeless unless the lighting is perfect and the subject is exactly in the centre.

If you are using Debian or Ubuntu linux, the focus is fixed as follows :

First install the control software (only this step needs to be done as root)

# apt-get install uvcdynctrl

You can list the possible webcam controls with

# uvcdynctrl -c

Open the program that you want to use the webcam with, e.g. cheese
then turn off auto-focus with the command:

# uvcdynctrl -s 'Focus, Auto' 0

Next, manually set the focus distance - try a few values such as 5, 10, 15, 20, until it is in focus

# uvcdynctrl -s 'Focus (absolute)' 20

To make things quicker next time, you can make a shell script that disables auto-focus, and sets the correct absolute focus.:)
