HASH(0x9eda866c) out of 5 stars pretty book but superficial content Feb. 29 2012
By liberal sprinkles - Published on
Format: Paperback
The book is very nicely presented with lovely photos but is somewhat disappointing content-wise. It contains three elements: information about some art retreats, profiles of 14 selected artists and one project each from these artists.

The pages about the art gatherings read like PR brochures - a short summary about the activities and workshop and a few quotes from the founders. The information is scanty and I couldn't really tell the difference between the various creative gatherings or what made them unique other than the locations and set-ups.

The introductions to the artists and their teaching philosophies and styles are likewise basic. I was already familiar with most of them so I didn't learn much. Most of the artists featured are mixed-media artists and the projects they share are limited to mixed-media paintings, with a few tutorials on creating ornaments and decorative objects. It would have been more of a balanced book if the artists chosen included those with known skills in sewing, jewelry-making, surface design and textile arts - representing a wider range of arts and crafts that are practised and for which workshops are offered at the retreats mentioned.

Most of the tutorials are guides to making similar projects, not detailed how-to's. To get the most out of the projects, you'd have to already be familiar with most of the techniques used. One of the steps in the project on making a mixed-media fabric journal actually tells the reader to Google video tutorials on quilt binding!

Overall, the book felt like a glossy magazine to me - very digestible but superficial. I enjoyed reading it but didn't learn much and won't need to touch it again.

HASH(0x9eda86c0) out of 5 stars A cursory overview; doesn't feel personally researched Feb. 25 2012
By Artsy bookwoman - Published on
Format: Paperback
If I had looked at this book at the bookstore before ordering, I know I wouldn't have bought it. But, I took a chance on it, and now really wish I'd bought the other book (by Rice Freeman Zachery) on this exact same topic (the mixed media art retreat) instead. My main concern is there is very little indication that the author actually attended any of the art retreats that she is writing about. There is no "you are here" feel about this, no useful information on what to actually expect, or what really differentiates one of these events from another. This impression is compounded by the rather lengthy list of photo credits; compare the names to the events and you'll realize all the photos were provided by either the profiled artists or the event organizers. They certainly weren't taken at the events by the author! Then, there's the list of events covered. Sure, the biggies that you'd expect to read about are there (Artfest, Art & Soul, Squam) but some of the others I've never even heard of. (Silver Bella?) I'm all for providing a comprehensive look at the different types of experiences out there, but I really question some of the author's choices. The projects presented by the artists are cursory overviews also. You'd have to actually know the techniques they are presenting to be able to complete the projects. And, once again, there are a couple of artists included that I've never even heard of (and I've been attending the 'mixed media art retreat circuit' events for years). When you look at the listing of where they teach - well, huh...they only teach at one event...yet there is a cadre of artists that teach at all these events regularly. Once again, odd choices. It's a pretty book, I'll give it that. I didn't actively dislike it, but I didn't finish it feeling like I'd really learned anything, nor felt any rush of "ah, reading these little details just brings it all right back" nostalgia. I doubt this one will stay in my library for long.

HASH(0x9eda8af8) out of 5 stars exploring creativity Jan. 24 2012
By K. Platt - Published on
Format: Paperback
Are you longing to take a creative pilgrimage? Do you get artist's block every time you try? Are you stuck for ideas and inspiration? This book could come in very useful. It takes a behind-the-scenes look at workshops and art retreats where you can create to your heart's content. It features 14 artists and their work with special projects. My absolute favourite project was Maya Donenfeld's idea for decorating any box. Discover the approaches of the different artists to their work, their processes and more. Each artist works with different media, in a different way. Covers painting, stamping, paper clay and more. This is an intriguing book that will help you discover your own creativity. It's full of useful information and crammed with colourful photos. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.
HASH(0x9eda8ec4) out of 5 stars disappointed. Oct. 19 2015

I am pretty disappointed in this book. I thought it was new. It clearly is not. There are bent pages and the cover is bent and back cover separating . The $6 sticker on it when I paid $22 is also an annoyance.
