2.0 out of 5 stars It sounded like a good idea March 17 2012
By Babytoxie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Not content to simply publish archive editions of the classic Warren horror magazine, Dark Horse Comics has been releasing an all-new CREEPY comic since 2009, attempting to reclaim the horror anthology throne it occupied from the mid-'60s to early '80s . The comic features material from the newly-interred, such as Joe Lansdale, Dan Braun, Eric Powell, and Hilary Barta, as well as old-school ghouls like Doug Moench, Angelo Torres, Gene Colan, Berni Wrightson, and Ken Kelly. While it's great to see this title being published again, I didn't enjoy CREEPY COMICS VOLUME 1.

This trade paperback contains issues 1 - 4 of the new series. The excellent covers, interludes, and "Loathsome Lore" are in the style of the classic magazine, and there's even a color section at the end. We get to know longtime horror host Uncle Creepy a bit better and are introduced to his family members (including, of course, Cousin Eerie). It's great to see that so many creators came back for this new series, as their work was part of what drew me to the originals back in the '70s. Unfortunately, the stories, which make up the bulk of the book, weren't very satisfying. In material like this, I can handle the flimsy premises, the forced narrative, and the stereotyping - heck, I *expect* them - but the punch just wasn't there. Some of them were far too long and lost quite a bit of their effect. Also, the quality of the art varied greatly - at times, it didn't work well with the material, so it was difficult to tell what was happening. As the comic is published quarterly, I'd think the publisher could present a better selection of stories.

The horror anthology format has been resurrected numerous times over the years (Doomed, Vincent Price Presents, etc.), but these attempts have felt more like novelties to me than serious efforts. It's a shame that this first collection of the new CREEPY doesn't stand out from the crowd.
4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy Good Time! July 2 2014

I really enjoyed reading this collection - good stories, great illustrations. My only complaint is it seemed way too short for the $9.99 price tag. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed and look forward to future gatherings with Uncle Creepy and kin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kind of surprised this old Creepy Fan April 30 2013

Not bad at all. Returning writers/artists return for a 4 volume collection of the 'NEW Creepy' (issues 1 thru 4 from 2008-2011. I did like most stories and each issue (of the Four) has a beautiful full color page of original issues cover. Can't wait for 5-8 to come out. Please be advised if you're buying for a younger teen that there is some use of the 'eff word' and some adult themes in some stories. Book is same size as a 'Showcase presents' book. At around 180 pages it's a nice little time filler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good OL' Uncle CREEPY April 2 2012
By J. BAILEY - Published on Amazon.com

Yeah he's back. If you missed the first 4 issues grab them here. I was fortunate enough to
get them all as they came out. Most all the stories are good. Wait until you meet his family.
Sister CREEPY is really Creepy. There is an story in each issue from one of the early CREEPY
magazines. I got another surprise from UNCLE CREEPY, reading CREEPY EERIE and VAMPIRELLA in my
younger days I never had a fan mail letter printed, I finally got a letter sent to UNCLE CREEPY printed. I collect the CREEPY EERIE and
VAMPIRELLA archives and even have 99% of the originals but why risk taking them out the archives
are used for that. This collection is worth having if you are a CREEPY freak!
