Review

"Arctic Drift has exotic locations, ruthless villains, and many narrow escapes and derring-do by Dirk Pitt, oceanography's answer to Indiana Jones. Cussler's fans come for swashbuckling [and] he delivers."
-Associated Press

Book Description

Dirk Pitt returns in the extraordinary new novel from the #1 New York Times--bestselling author.

In A.D. 327, a Roman galley barely escapes a pirate attack with its extraordinary cargo. In 1916, a British warship mysteriously explodes in the middle of the North Sea. In the present day, a cluster of important mosques in Turkey and Egypt are wracked by explosions. Does anything tie them together?

NUMA director Dirk Pitt is about to find out, as Roman artifacts discovered in Turkey and Israel unnervingly connect to the rise of a fundamentalist movement determined to restore the glory of the Ottoman Empire, and to the existence of a mysterious "manifest," lost long ago, which if discovered again . . . just may change the history of the world as we know it.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Stars Come Out Again and Keep the Action Moving, Nov 30 2010

"Thus you shall act in the fear of the LORD, faithfully and with a loyal heart:" -- 2 Chronicles 19:9 (NKJV)

When Dirk Pitt, Al Giordino, and Rudi Gunn take to the field, life becomes difficult for the villains and wonderfully exciting for readers. This action tale also includes Dirk, Jr. and Summer. Dirk and Dirk, Jr. are also kept busy protecting (or attempting to protect) the women in their lives.

The book is enlivened by multiple story threads and mysteries that powerfully intersect before the story is over. The backdrop involves terrorism for profit and corrupt religious leaders of more than one faith. It felt gratuitous and not credible to me to make the religious leaders to be evil doers, and it made me grade the book down one star.

As always, Dirk and Al trying to save the world becomes the center of the story's appeal and that center holds up well. I also liked the use of "advanced" technology in not such extreme (and not so hard to credit) forms in this book.

Dirk, Jr. and Summer still come across as pale imitations of their father. I hope that future stories will be stronger in this regard.

If you enjoy learning more about countries you don't know much about, you'll find the aspects of the story that occur in Turkey to be fun. I know that I did.

I must also note that this is another case where the Kindle version of the book is vastly overpriced versus the hardcover. Why do publishers do that?

4.0 out of 5 stars quick read + enjoyable, April 10 2012
This review is from: Crescent Dawn (Mass Market Paperback)
i have now read almost a dozen books by cussler.... very action and suspense oriented. all of his books are read uber fast (and i am not a book worm).1 week tops to read his books. dirk pitt and his crew are the central figures of this book. kind of like indiana jones/lara croft but usually his books center around an under water discovery plus racing bad guys on land and water. you won't be dissapointed with cussler.

3.0 out of 5 stars Turkish politics, Mar 26 2011

Hmm, mysterious religious relics, a Church that doesn't want the truth to come out, have we seen that story already? Oh that and a livlier Dirk Pitt this time, his adventurous kids Summer and Dirk Jr., buddy Giordano and a brother and sister out to rule their corner of the world, this time Turkey, Israel, Cyprus with a stop in England. Nice travelogue and history lessons for Instanbul and Jerusalem. The usual Cussler underwater toys, hand to hand fighting, some shooting and a big bang or two. This one also is more down to earth than the early Pitt novels which had more 007/sci-fi outrageous storylines, I guess Cussler pere et fils want to keep it real. So a technically proficient read but lacks some sizzle. Just OK.
