Book Description

"That night so long ago, New York's elite had stood in their elegant finest, quivering with shock, speechless, before the whispers had begun. Everyone, it seemed, had known that no good could come of Lily Blakemore." The Atlanta Journal/Constitution called Linda Francis Lee's Blue Waltz "absolutely stunning" and bestselling author Mary Jo Putney called Emerald Rain "a deeply compelling story of love, pain, and forgiveness... written with rare power and compassion." Now, Lee presents an enchanting new romance set amidst the opulence of high society in 1896 New York. The scandal was devastating. The damage irreparable. Lily Blakemore's fall from grace was notorious. But details about the incident remained a well-guarded mystery in New York society--a secret as elusive as Lily herself, who disappeared shortly after her disgrace. But now ten years have passed--and Crimson Lily is finally coming home. She dares to hope she will be welcomed. She does not dare to hope for love--until she meets Morgan Elliott. But Morgan must resist Lily's legendary charms--and equally enthralled. Perhaps it is finally his time--to see paradise...

Reading Lily and Morgan's story was a treat. Ms. Lee weaves a tender story about finding oneself. Lily was always a bit of a wild child and when trouble arises, society is willing to think the worst of her. The character of Lily is well developed and extremely likable. She is strong, but deep down just wants acceptance like everyone else. Morgan is a perfect foil for her and though has misgivings of his own, is there for her. The plot takes twists and turns that I did not expect, and thus completely appreciated. Unlike so many stories today, which seem to end abruptly, as if the author has reached a deadline, Crimson Lace, rolls to a comfortable and satisfying end.

There are many levels to this story, and I wonder if the story shouldn't be called something like 'The Many Betrayals of Lily'. She has my vote for woman of the year! With the help of many colorful secondary characters, and steamy, tention filled scenes, this story is well worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Americana-a bit dark, Oct 26 1997

This review is from: Crimson Lace (Paperback)
In 1886, scandal rocked the New York jet set (or is that carriage set?) with Lily Blakesmore being at the center of the storm. For the outrageous behavior that led to her disgrace, Lily is forced to flee from high society, forevermore to be known as "Crimson Lily".

Ten years later, Lily must return to New York to take care of her newly orphaned nieces and nephew. Lily pretends to be flamboyant in order to hide her inner anxieties. Meanwhile, Morgan Elliot believes that business man and confident to politicians, John Crandall, is crooked. He plans to get the goods on the man and expose him. To accomplish his quest, he takes a job at Blakesmore House, but when he sees Lily and the vile graffiti painted on her wall, he wants to quit the assignment. As Morgan continues to investigate, he becomes obsessed with knowing what really happened a decade ago, since Lily is clearly a caring person. The couple have somehow managed to fall in love with each other, but distrust and betrayal engulf Lily, making it seem impossible for her to share a lifetime of happiness with anyone.

No one does the gay nineties New York better than Linda Francis Lee. Like her previous tale, THE BLUE WALTZ, her current novel, CRIMSON LACE, is a fantastic period piece that brings alive a bygone era. The lead protagonists are charming and wonderful, and the support cast add that city pizzazz to the mix. The historical story line has bits of intrigue to spice it up, turning Ms. Lee book into a must read for fans of Americana romance.
