Book Description

May 2004
In F. Paul Wilson's 8th Repairman Jack novel, CRISSCROSS, Jack is back in New York and working on two unrelated fix-its. The first involves a nun being blackmailed by someone who has photos of her that she does not want made public. Who or what is in those photos, she won’t say, but with her meager savings just about exhausted, she hires Jack to help her.

The second fix-it seems straightforward enough: Elderly Maria Roselli hires Jack to find her missing son. He joined the Dormentalist Church years ago and seemed happier than she’d ever seen him. But it’s been weeks since she’s heard from him and she’s worried. The deeper Jack digs, the more certain he becomes that the Dormentalist Church has a secret agenda hidden not only from the public, but from most of its members as well.

The suspenseful finale reveals a side of Jack that is darker than we’ve ever seen as he crisscrosses the two fix-it jobs to settle deadly scores.

For those ordering only through Gauntlet, you will receive the chapbook Crisscross: An Outline. It's the outline F. Paul Wilson wrote for the book. Read the book, then the outline to see how they differ. A rare treat for fans of the creator of Repairman Jack.

From Publishers Weekly

The eighth novel in Wilson's Repairman Jack saga pulses with the usual entertaining mix of pulp heroics and supernatural thrills. Jack, a private vigilante-for-hire who flies below the radar of legitimate law enforcement, is aware that he and his crime-fighting opponents are merely human pawns in a timeless cosmic battle waged by entities of "Otherness" known as the Ally and the Adversary. This time, his exploits involve infiltrating the Dormentalists, a shady pseudoreligion that, under megalomaniacal poobah Luther Brady, has grown into a wealthy worldwide cult with vicious instincts for self-preservation. Although warned at the end of Gateways (2003) that "there will be no more coincidences," Jack is stunned to discover that some of the hokiest elements of Dormentalist doctrine eerily echo aspects of the Adversary's malignant design for universal dominance. Suspense escalates through an intersecting subplot involving a blackmailed Catholic nun and appearances by girlfriend Gia, whose difficult pregnancy increasingly portends a strange destiny for Jack. The body count is high, the deaths are uncommonly brutal and the ever-capable Jack is more fallible than usual. But readers who identify with Jack's clients and their need to believe that justice is still possible in a corrupted world will find this all the more reason to sympathize with a hero who achieves both greater humanity and epic stature with each new adventure.

Review

"Fans who prefer Wilson's medical thrillers, like Sims, will nonetheless find delight here."--Kirkus Reviews on Crisscross

"There are some writers who, once they settle into an ongoing character, become complacent and happily just write and rewrite the same two of three books over and over again. And then there's F. Paul Wilson, whose Repairman Jack series seems to get better as its hero gets closer and closer to his ultimate fate in Wilson's previous Nightworld…Wilson never lets the pacing lag, using short and punchy chapters to keep the reader turning the page…Crisscross is a new addition to the rich mythology of Repairman Jack. If you haven't made the acquaintance of wither Wilson or his signature character, here's a terrific place to start. And if you have, Crisscross is another great adventure into inner-city weirdness."--Fangoria

"Repairman Jack novels are always fun to read, but this thriller, though also quite entertaining and exciting, is much darker than usual. He solves the nun's problem, but the results are not what he or she expected forcing him to take an amoral position with the blackmailer. The Brady problem is simply world threatening. For those who know Jack will know that F. Paul Wilson provides another fantastic reading experience."--Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine on Crisscross

"Good stuff, with a nasty twist at times, and Jack's usual efficient methods of correction."--Chronicle

5.0 out of 5 stars Repairman Jack for President July 2 2004
Format:Hardcover
I'm a big F. Paul Wilson fan and a huge Repairman Jack fan. I paid the $55.00 for the limited edition book. Why? Two reasons. One, I collect books (and actually read them). Two, I did not want to want for the trade edition to come out. Crisscross was worth well worth the money and time I spent reading the book. I have all of the Gauntlet Press Repairman Jack books.

Repairman Jack is a fix-it guy. If you have a problem, he will fix it for you. He lives on the fringe of society. He does not have a social security number, nor does he pay taxes. In Crisscross, there are two story lines that tie in together. A nun, who is caught on film in a compromising position wants Jack to get back the pictures. Two, a mother wants Jack to find her son who is deeply involved in a world wide cult with sinister ties.

Crisscross is a stand alone book, but is part of Wilson's Adversary series (I think it fits into the Lovecraft Universe). Most of Wilson's books and short stories (including an anthology that he edited) tie into his Adversary Universe. His books are awesome and I'm happy that I've started reading them about four years back.

Wilson is definitely one of the best writers out there. If you don't want to spend $55 on a limited edition, you can wait until it is released in trade hardback or paperback. In the meantime, you can pick up trade hardbacks and paperbacks of the Adversary series (The Keep, The Touch, The Tomb, Reborn, Reprisal and Nightworld), and the Repairman Jack books (The Tomb, Legacies, Conspiracies, All the Rage, Hosts, Gateways, and The Haunted Air).

This is the best series out there.

Almost all of the "Repairman Jack" novels have been put out in Signed (Autographed to those who don't understand what Signed means), numbered (means this edition is limited to just a few hundred copies), editions that are produced with the finish paper and binding for the dollar. These editions eventually become collectibles as they go out of print. CRISSCROSS, like the rest of the books in this fabulous series, is excellent with a plot filled with unanticipated twists, a more in-depth look at our dark hero with just the hint of what is to come in the near future for him. A little research on one's part would have shown that the Trade Hardcover edition of CRISSCROSS will out at the end of October and that Amazon.com has it on sale right now for a little over $16.00. Don't rate an excellent thriller one star just because you aren't paying close enough attention to the book market and the type of book that has a $55.00 price tag on it. Limited editions are usually reserved for collectors of the series, not for the average reader. Enough said!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reason for Price May 27 2004
Format:Hardcover
The reason it is so expensive is because Gauntlett Press releases a limited number of signed and number special edition first print books for many authors, F Paul Wilson's latest, Crisscross, being one of them...If you give it some time when they expectedly will sell out, the regular releases will be put out at a more "normal" price
