luv2knit,,,,,,,is luv'n2crochet!, April 22 2004
This review is from: Crochet W/Style (Paperback)
I first took up crochet because there were some lovely fabrics that I felt could be made with this needleart form,
I have been a real knit- a -holic, HOWEVER,
as I learn to crochet, and begin to enjoy the process , I searched for patterns that made me want to create something truly unique.
I enjoy blending yarns to create my own colors and textures in knitting, but what I did find was that the art of crochet IS all about texture creation ,,
( sometimes we knitters get into the stockinette stitch rut far too often)
This author has clearly designed some of the BEST patterns in crochet that I have EVER seen!
and,,,to my HUGE surprise,,,using products that produce a fabric that some high end clothing could never duplicate.
That said, its amazing to me, the knitter who has spent 45.00 on a single skein of yarn (yes, but you should have seen it,,,)
uses simple products that ,,are incredibly AVAILABLE to all and very affordable,( how about 18.00 for the total contents of yarn needed for the summer vest???)
Everything looks PROFESSIONAL! In the past years,, I have spent a great deal of time and money taking classes learning how important it is to honor your needlework and time by creating the best garment you possibly could,,,,,
Melissa Leapman,,,,,you have truly "converted" me to a lover of the art of crochet ,,, and everything you have in this book I want to make two of!
Thanks for showing a sold out , die hard knitter,,that crochet items can be as classy ,,,if not MORE in some cases!
I would buy ANY book this author wrote, she is one talented designer.
no question,,,,my time will now be split equally in my needlearts because of these designs and,,,,,I am more than willing to blend the two of them when I want to make up something truly unique.
one more thing,,,,,,
my sister in law crocheted one of her sweaters last summer,,,
she took 2 blue ribbons ( a county ribbon and State) as well as Best in show,,,,,she wore it recently with a simple black sleeveless dress and a strand of pearls,,, how very classic ( and chic!) Everyone at that party commented on this sweater,,,
now,,,,,,,get the book!
( and hope she writes another one,,,,,,,,)

This book is top notch!, Feb 21 2003
This review is from: Crochet W/Style (Paperback)
It is a pity that the sneak peak inside this book doesn't show you the best it has to offer because it is filled with some of the most gorgeous sweater and cardigan crochet designs that I have ever seen. The aran sweaters on the back cover are absolutely gorgeous. The small pic really doesn't do them justice. The cabled aran does a great job of showing off Melissa Leapman's design genius and no longer makes me envious of knitted cable arans. If you are looking for spring and summer sweaters, you will not be disappointed. There are many gorgeous ones here as many designs use the lighter DK and sportweight yarns.
As I expected from Melissa Leapman, the instructions are very thorough. Every pattern comes with a diagram with the measurements noted. I find this extremely useful as proper fit is essential to the success of any garment. I personally tend to not meet the right guage height requirements when my width is perfect so the charts really help me to make the proper modifications. Speaking of fit, nearly every sweater featured in this book has inset sleeves which not only make a better looking garment but a more comfortable fitting one as well. In addition to the instructions, there are several tip tidbits to be found amongst the patterns throughout the book such as alternate design/color suggestions and tips for a more professional finishing.
The yarns used are all fairly easy to find or easy to substitute with another yarn. The sizes range from S-XL but there are quite a few designs that will go up to 2X as the bust measurements go up to 54 inches on some designs.
If you only want one crocheted sweater pattern book in your collection, "Crochet With Style" should be your first pick.
