Once in a while you come across a movie that you view because of curiosity or maybe because there isn't anything better available at that time. It is quite a wondrous feeling when you find that contrary to your low expectation, what you are viewing is one of the best films of its genre ever made. This vampire horror film is not only atypical of the genre, it is simply much too profound to simply categorize into any kind of genre.
There is so much to this film it is difficult to know where to begin. A beautifully made film, it has a very intriguing story line that has an emotional, moral, and spiritual complexity that you rarely find in any film, let alone a horror film. The fact that the film is in Spanish (with sub-titles) does nothing to take away from the enjoyment of the film, in fact, if anything it adds to its exotic flavour.
Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, this film in my opinion is a masterpiece of the genre. I am very grateful I had the opportunity to see this film. It was a real pleasure.
