A must read for all riders!,

No matter what your dicipline, this is THE book to read if you want to make your horse balenced, supple, and easier to ride! Jane Savioe writes in a very clear and concise way. As a dressage rider I admire her use of the tranining scale and German system. All the dressage theory in the world doesn't help if you can't put it into practice on less than perfect horses! I also highly reccomend her second book as well. The description of the half halt is the best I've seen. These books are a good reference source for the pleasure rider, and as a complament to a lesson program. I can tell from experience that it is easier to do a little reading now then to go back and fix mistakes later!

This book is very good. I have ridden on the hunter/jumper circuit since I was 8 years old (I am now 25), and it is absolutely amazing how ignorant I was of the very basics of riding on the flat. I have ridden with all the best jumper coaches in my province, and not one of them told me about the importance of an elastic feel with the horses mouth. Not one of them taught me how to engage my horse from the hind-end forward; I believe that a lot of us are guilty of riding our horses from the front to back. And not one of them taught me that a proper leg-yield is done with slight flexion. I really can't believe I've made it as far as I did without riding.. well, properly.
I thought that this book was slow to get started.. I probably could have skipped the first three chapters. But the rest of the book has had such an impact on me and my riding. My horse is finally starting to move forward and accept the bit, and our relationship is much more sound. I cannot thank the author enough for writing it. I am definitely going to order book 2.
