Book Description

Mar 28 2011

From one of our finest historians comes an outstanding exploration of the British monarchy from the retreat of the Romans up until the modern day. With a new chapter on Royal Weddings - this is essential reading for those who want to understand more about how monarchy has shaped the British nation.

The monarchy is one of Britain’s most venerable and revered institutions – but also one of its most tumultuous. In this substantially revised, updated and expanded compendium of two earlier volumes, David Starkey charts its roller-coaster history, starting with the warring tribal kings who continued to exercise their sway under the Romans. New material on the late Middle Ages and the Wars of the Roses brings the story to the turbulent reign of the Tudors and on through the chaos of the Civil War that first unseated and then beheaded a king.

The Republic that followed Charles I’s execution smashed the Imperial Crown and attempted to eradicate the word ‘king’ from the language. For a time, it seemed the throne itself had died with its most recent occupant. And yet, vulnerable though it had been shown to be, the monarchy also proved surprisingly resilient, rebuilding itself alongside Britain’s burgeoning Empire.

Starkey brings the tempestuous story up to the present, guiding us through the abdication of Edward VIII and the dissolution of the marriage between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, with a new chapter on the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, royal weddings and the future of monarchy.

Throughout, Starkey highlights both the strength and the terrible fragility of an institution that has seemed, at times, perilously close to extinction. Bringing to life a cast of colourful characters, this brilliant overview of the history of Britain through her kings and queens provides an in-depth examination of the monarchy, as well as a vidid and iconoclastic portrait of British culture, politics and nationhood, embodied in an institution that has defined the realm for nearly two thousand years.

Review

‘A masterpiece of accessible history, underscored with profound scholarship…the author’s passion for his subject, the royal tale of England, which is the backbone of this nation’s story explodes from every page. I defy anybody not to enjoy this book’ Guardian

‘[Starkey] has a lovely eye for a good story…he also has a nice line in snarky humour…Starkey’s great skill is to weave big themes quietly into a rollicking narrative so that you absorb them almost without noticing they are there’ Daily Telegraph

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommendable, accessible and fun May 7 2012

Whether you are interested in history, the monarchy, the British Isles, or just in watching above-average television programming, you are bound to have come across one of Starkey's series, and would probably agree that his persona can be a deterrent for watching them. However, David Starkey is a highly qualified and respected historian, who also happens to write very well. This particular book is broad stroke overview of 2000 years of Crown & Country. In it, the gossiping tone of Starkey's TV persona appears decanted into sporadic doses of witty commentary and sweeping statements, which prove timely while making for a highly entertaining read. This is a very recommendable, accessible and fun book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed! Mar 21 2012

I am tired of being stumped by Jeopardy answers that require intimate knowledge of the kings and queens (and conquerors) of England. This book has a great flow chart from King Number One through QEII. And it has a very thorough explanation of the history and palace intrigues. Once you read this book, you will understand why the English language is so complicated. My gosh, the island was occupied by just about everyone: Romans, Vikings, Norwegians, Danes, Germans, French, Dutch, and my ancestors those sneaky Celts. No real king until 800 AD. No real interest in learning and languages until 1000 AD. England definitely lagged the world in cultural development. Even Robin Hood is mentioned. I ended up researching maps of 10th century England just to see where all the action was taking place. This is a well-written, well-documented history of an empire. I highly recommend it.

This is a fantastic book. A bit more detailed that his Monarchy book, but still the same witty and precise writing. Careful descriptions give the reader a sense of understanding the characters in English history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crown and Country July 25 2012
By Jo Ann Butler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Just imagine that breathtaking moment when you become the ruler of Great Britain. Your father or brother dies, or perhaps you sailed across the Strait of Dover to slay the previous king. You are now in charge of everything. Armies move at your command, people die at your whim. Nobody can tell you what to do either - unless you overreach and lose your head.

Any man or woman who may one day wear the crown must dream, "What shall I do when I am king?" David Starkey's nonfiction Crown & Country, now in its third revision, tells us how each ruler from before the Roman invasion to the present carried out those plans; many for the better, a few for the worse. Starkey's artful biographies of each king and queen provide a delightful buffet for everyone who loves the royals or British history. Maps would have been helpful, but clearly-drawn family trees untangle the complicated royal lineages from the House of Wessex to the House of Windsor. I highly recommend this entertaining and very useful history.
