"Crash the System" is the melodic rock side of metal heroes Mats Leven, Goran Edman, Bjorn Jansson and Daniel Flores. Feb. 1 2010
By Nikiforos V. Skoumas - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Crash the system is the AOR/ melodic rock project of drum prodigy Daniel Flores ("The Codex" ex- "Tears of anger") and guitarist Soren Kronqvist who is also the main composer on the "Crowning". Vocals are contributed by renowned metal singers Goran Edman, Mats Leven, Bjorn Jansson and Thomas Vikstrom.
I suppose the risk factor for this project was particularly high as three out of four singers are known for concentrating on neoclassical/power metal while drummer Daniel Flores' background focuses mainly on progressive-power metal; so it was quite interesting to see how this project would materialize.

It does not take more than a start to finish play of "Crash the system" for one to realize that these guys are capable of handling any type of rock project as they blend perfectly with the AOR atmosphere; in particular Mats Leven and Bjorn Jansson are definitely captivating. So in terms of performances "The Crowning" is an absolute success.

In terms of songwriting I have to say that "Crash..." will probably cause mixed feelings on first play; the listener might not catch up to the direction of the album immediately as song structures demonstrate quite heavy rhythm section, regular use of strings and orchestra fills therefore often contrasting with the choruses which are much more delicate (as this is AOR) and conventional.
So at first spin something did not quite sit well; but that is nothing a couple more plays will not fix. Indeed having played the album throughout at least ten times, I have to say the more you listen the more natural and consistent it sounds. Favorite tracks include "All because of you", "I believe in love", the upbeat "Enough of your loving", the super radio friendly "Rolling stone" and "Don't tell me no lies".

While it is not a case of love at first sight, If you are willing to invest some time on the songs of "The crowning" you will certainly be rewarded; It sounds better and better.
Smooth, Swedish AOR project Dec 7 2010

Here's another interesting collaboration on the Frontiers label. Crash the System is a project put together by Tears of Anger/Mind Key drummer Daniel Flores and guitarist Soren Kronqvist. Vocals on the band's debut album The Crowning are provided by some of the melodic rock genre's best singers: Goran Edman (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen), Mats Leven (Therion), Thomas Vikstrom (ex-Candlemass) and Bjorn Jansson (Tears of Anger).

The Crowning is an impressive melodic rock album, and is about what you'd expect from a Swedish band of this caliber. If you're used to hearing these guys in a more metal setting, the AOR direction Crash the System takes may come as a bit of a shock. They do it well, though, serving up melodic rockers and moving ballads with real style and finesse. The Crowning actually reminds me a lot of some of Brazen Abbot's more mellow moments, but that may just be the presence of Brazen Abbot veterans Vikstrom and Edman, both of whom give standout performances here.

If you're a fan of AOR and melodic rock, particularly bands like Street Talk, Work of Art and Hugo, you really can't go wrong with The Crowning. Hopefully this won't be the last we hear from Crash the System.

Ehhh... Aug. 27 2009

It's OK, I guess... Sort of sounds like an album of Bon Jovi B-sides. It's kind of like oatmeal for breakfast. You can eat it, it tastes ok, but you'd really rather have Eggs Benedict.
