This book is a sequel for author Shulman's "Amboy Dukes." It's central character is Mitch Wolf, who had been the leader of the Dukes, a youth gang in a Brooklyn slum neighborhood (Brownsville). Mitch comes across as a decent, well-meaning individual (with whom the reader identifies, ) from a decent family. He has a very nice and quite likeable girlfriend, Dorothy, who is very much in love with him. But, unfortunately, he has uncontrollable "hots" for a useless and worthless WHORE, who doesn't have much self-respect, but knows all the tricks of her trade, and is always mixed up and involved with criminal types. You feel sorry because Mitch seems to suffer from a shortage of self-respect and self-esteem. What this very good and valuable book teaches is that EVERY PERSON needs to have those two very important qualities--self-respect and self-esteem,-- and that you can't have much of a life without them! One thing that Irving Shulman's books teach is that living in a slum, like Brownsville, can really take it's toll! It may have cheap rents but it's definitely no bargain! In truth, and always in real life, there are no bargains, you always get what you pay for!
