Growing up in rural British Columbia, Deni Béchard believes his charismatic father is infallible. Wild, unpredictable, even dangerous, André is worshipped by his young son, who believes that his father can do no wrong. When the boy discovers his father’s true identity — and the crime sprees and prison sentences attached to it — his imagination is set on fire. Before long, he is imagining himself as a character in one of his father’s stories. At once attracted and repelled, Deni can’t escape the sense that his father’s life holds the key to understanding himself and to making sense of his own passions, aversions, and motivations. Eventually he finds himself snared in the controlling impulses of his mysterious father and increasingly obsessed by his father’s own muted recollections of the childhood he’d fled long ago — his birth to a poor family in the Gaspé, his hunger for excitement and a better life, his crimes spreading out from Québec to the American west, his identity as ephemeral as the wind. Cures for Hunger is a gripping memoir of a young man’s quest to understand the hunger that burns for the unattainable, the story of the heart of a boy looking for the soul of a man and the darkness that he finds within. Review

“A moving story of rebellion, lost love, criminal daring, and restless searching. Driven above all by the need to grasp his father’s secrets, Béchard has written his narrative in skillful, resonant prose graced with a subtle tone of obsession and longing.” — Leonard Gardner, author of Fat City (20120509)

From the Inside Flap

“As the motor’s vibrations cradled me, I tried to envision my life. I saw the red lines of highways on the map, stretched between cities like threads of torn cloth. I imagined a book that could hold it all together, plains and mountain ranges, dust-drab towns beyond interstates, and somewhere on the far edges, the valley in British Columbia and those nights in Virginia when I snuck out and stalked the highway, trying to fathom where I belonged on this threadbare continent.” Growing up in rural British Columbia, Deni Béchard believes his father is infallible. Wild, charismatic, even dangerous, André Béchard is worshipped by his young son, who holds him in awe and in fear. When Deni discovers his father’s true identity — his imagination is set ablaze. Before long, boyish rebelliousness gives way to fantasies about a life of crime. he flirts with danger and becomes ensnared in his father’s controlling impulses. Both attracted and repelled, Deni cannot escape the feeling that his father’s life holds the key to making sense of his own passions and longings, his thirst for the rush of life lived on the edge. Increasingly obsessed, he travels the continent to unravel the mystery of his father — his birth to a poor family in the Gaspé, his appetite for excitement, his crimes spreading out from Quebec to the American West, his identity as ephemeral as the wind. Cures for Hunger is a gripping memoir of a young man’s quest to understand the hunger that burns for the unattainable, the story of the heart of a boy looking for the soul of a man and the darkness that he finds within. It's always unfair to compare, but this book has some Cormac McCarthy, a bit of Faulkner and some Russell Banks. The story of a young man looking for his dad who was a bank robber. Thoughtful and exciting.
