Product Description

Richard Babin demonstrates the arts of test cutting (tameshigiri) and sworsmanship (battodo). With co-author, Sensei Bob Elder, founder and president of the US Federation of Battodo and the US Federation of Toyama Ryu, Babin covers every aspect of the test-cutting process, including the selection of an appropriate blade, the construction of targets and stands, and the mechanics of cutting, all while emphasizing safety and proper attitude. This invaluable guide also teaches modern swordsmen how to completely rehabilitate a military sword for use in cutting, including straightening, sharpening and polishing the blade and making a new handle and scabbard.

As someone who is trying to find out more about the proper way to cut with a Japanese sword, I found this book very informative and interesting. The presentation of the information is systematic and comprehensive. The topic covered moves from a short history to the mechanics of cutting and the introduction of some basic positions and care to preparation of cutting targets.

I've found this book facinating and filled with the Ancient Japanese Customs as well as the gift of grace and respect in the use of the sword only done with the best of experience and knowledge in the use and care of the sword. As well as those who master them. This is a wonderful book.

This review is from: Cutting Targets with the Japanese Sword: Practical Tameshigiri and Battodo for the Modern Swordsman (Paperback)
This is a fantastic and comprehensive book covering many issues of sword care that are not found in most books on the subject. There is also a wealth of pictures, diagrams, and historical information, including quite a bit of information about the underlying physics behind sword cutting. This book is a must for serious enthuiasts.
