I was planning to use this hub to easily switch my keyboard, external HDD and USB headset between 2 laptops I frequently use. Both laptops are Intel chipsets (i7 and i5 CPUs) running Windows 7 Pro. The keyboard I use is MS Ergonomic keyboard, the headset is a Plantronics Blackwire 200 series, and the HDD is a WD Passport (USB 3.0). Saying this because I am not attaching any alien hardware with this hub yet very common components. I also have a MS Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 4000.

So, first time I plug everything in my first laptop, Windows takes about 5 minutes to install a "USB Composite Device" and "Generic USB Hub"... then it goes on to install the keyboard, and the headset. Finally, about 7-8 minutes later I have everything connected, everything works. Great! Then I put my first laptop to sleep, unplug the hub and plug it in the second laptop. Another 7-8 minutes later, and everything works. At this point I'm pretty happy, hoping that these one time installations are done and from now on i just switch back and forth. BUT...

Next time I plug in my first laptop, drivers for the keyboard that was installed the day before can't be found, and also the USB hub is now an "unknown device". Also, Windows can no longer download any updates (!), or search for drivers, and to make things more interesting, it forgets that it has a Bluetooth mouse paired, and it won't pair with it again. It start lagging, the HDD is spinning like crazy, CPU spikes to 80%... I assume this is a glitch, so I kill my computer (hold power button), restart, and the computer just hangs... not knowing what's up, I unplug the USB hub, and it's like I gave my laptop an adrenalin shot - boots up like nothing happened. Plug in the USB hub again, same problem.

As a previous reviewer mentioned the option to be able to charge your high powered USB devices was the main draw for me to this product, but ... you have to read the details very closely. It does NOT charge your high power devices if the hub is connected to a computer and you're not running a specific version of windows that they make a piece of software for that allows this to happen. If you are not running or cannot run this additional software this device can be a USB hub OR a high powered USB charger but not both at the same time, which is what I foolishly assumed it was capable of.

This downfall is very disappointing so if you are looking to actually use it as a hub for your Mac and charge your high power devices at the same time look elsewhere, this device won't get the job done.

Lastly I find that the blue LED is annoying, it's overly bright and hurts the eyes. The quick fix for this is the same as I've used for a lot of other devices with these too-intense LEDs -- a piece of electrical tape covering the LED. So now it's ugly AND I can't charge my high powered USB devices while also using it as a hub with my Mac as I had hoped it would.

I've always avoided using USB hubs because of 1) their general poor hardware quality 2) power issues 3) reliability issues and buginess. Also - they usually look like terrible and are a pain to use because of the arrangement of the ports on them (especially ones with more than 4 ports)

So far this hub is bang-on across the points listed above - 1) looks like its of very good hardware quality 2) comes with a nice 5V powersupply (I think its 2A? i didn't check) 3) seems reliable so far... though i haven't had it for long. 3) THE DESIGN IS PERFECT - the power and the downlink port are on the BACK, and all of the device ports are on the FRONT in a very nice stacked arrangement. And it even has rubber feet on the bottom to keep it in place on the table. FANTASTIC. super fantastic. very pleased. yes.

The only thing that could be better is they could drop the two-tone D-link colour scheme (and the silly fake-vent holes) - oh and all the LEDs. I really just needs one, not eight.

So far, this looks like a decent hub, but one of the main reasons I ordered it was to set up a charging station for my growing collection of USB powered toys. Unfortunately, in order for this hub to work it has to be hooked up to a computer. I couldnt find a definitive answer as to whether this was able to be a standalone unit or not, so I took a chance (largely due to the 2 high-current ports. Unfortunately - mine didnt have these on it)
If you're looking for a unit that you can use independent of your computer, this isn't the right unit for you. If you're looking for a quick hub to connect all your stuff, this is working out just fine, and the price is quite reasonable.
