Top of the Game April 3 2012
By Robert Taylor - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Alongside Agoria's Balance Series 16, Burial's Street Halo and Kindred EPs, John Talabot's Fin, Digweed's Structures 2 and Ben UFO's Rinse FM mix, this superlative mix ranks at the top of progressive electronic music produced in the last year or so. The DJ Kicks series is as reliable generally as Global Underground once was, and as the Balance Series continues to be. It seems that K7 (DJ Kicks) and EQ Recordings (Balance) respectively value their reputation of fostering premier underground and progressive electronic artists.
Word of advice. This CD/MP3 of Photek's comes in two forms. A shortened form on CD, and a longer form with the tracks fleshed out to their full potential, apparently on the MP3 download only. The MP3 offering therefore is very tempting, although the 65 min CD has its own succinct joys. It's not quite a euphoria inducing dance mix from Photek, but middles between mid tempo cerebral listening along with some ecstatic moments, if you get my drift.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you what's on the compilation because that would be a waste of my time and yours. Mostly downtempo, "post-dubstep", and house music. Now, with that out of the way, you should buy this compilation. It's really good, possibly the best mix of 2012 and one of the better DJ Kicks in a while. It's musical and mellow, and builds such a vibrant mood. I can't describe it well, but I'll tell you what it's not - cheap. A lot of dubstep sounds cheap, rehashed, and immature. This is a mix you could reasonably play to your parents and they could enjoy it. Classy stuff, with just the right amount of ravey-electronic edge to it (see the acid track M25FM) to keep it raw.
I rarely give 5 stars but this is a MUST! Jan. 18 2014

DJ Kicks series again prove its professionality in selecting the correct artists and Photek proved again that he is the very talented producer and one of my favourites of all time. This mix is flawless and track precisely selected and placed in order that you simply do not want the CD to stop......Unfortunatelly, this "horrible" moment shall come after 70minutes or so and you have to start again :(. Congratulations, Photek and thank you!!!
It's a creeper......grows on you real nice! May 21 2012

Definitely a solid mix, some good eclectic, dark, grungy, breaks, and deep beats on here. Isn't consistent (to my personal tastes) all the way through, but I won't knock it for that. Definitely a "must hear." Not only one of the better DJ Kicks out there, but one of the best mixes I've heard in a while... overall, SUPERB QUALITY.

I have a 3-disc CD changer. This disc has been in the changer since I got it. The combination of tech house, true dubstep, and somewhat of a D&B sound just has me hooked. That music you listen to while driving long trips, is the soul of this mix.
