As a pre-trip reader that you can use to dial-in on itinerary this book is fine. The maps are very detailed and fine grained, and the graphics of the sights are gorgeous and rich with details. So far so good. As a reference guide while on your trip however, its almost useless. The rich maps are too detailed and localized and provide very little context when you're, say, trying to plot your walking course from the Spice Market to the Blue Mosque. Or when you're trying to figure out how to take the metro back to town after a ferry ride up the Bosphorus. Some of the details on where to stay suggest that the reviewers didn't actually stay there: the description of our spectacular cave hotel, Esbelli Evi, in Urgup, starts with: "this hotel is tastefully decorated, the rooms are clean, large and comfortable, and the bathrooms large and modern". All true, I suppose, but this hardly paints a picture of what was, to us, one of the more beautiful, and unique, boutique hotels we have ever had the pleasure of visiting. No mention of the central feature and attribute...it was a cave hotel after all! So as a book to get you excited about your trip, sure....take it along and review in the evenings to plot your itineraries. As a "field guide" to lug along in your pack each day? Nope...won't serve you there at all...leave it back at the room. And do not use it for recommendations on where to stay...cross-referencing between trip advisor and numerous other sites will give you a much better sense of lodging/dining opportunities.

HASH(0xa066ecd8) out of 5 stars Great book for planning your own tour within an area. Sept. 2 2013
By Julie W. Snyder - Published on Amazon.com
While preparing for our three week DIY driving tour of Turkey in the fall of 2013, we received this book as a gift. We have used the DK EYEWITNESS TRAVEL books in the past and have enjoyed them. They are always printed on high quality paper. They seem to last well beyond the trip.

1. The DK Travel Guides are clearly laid out and this one is no exception:
***Starting with an Introduction of Turkey,
*** Istanbul - Area by Area,
***Turkey - Region by Region,
***Travellers' Needs,
and a Survival Guide while inTurkey.

2. We use these guides to plan a tour within an area we are going to visit, e.g. Topkapi Palace. We read about it (8 pages with photos & diagrams), then use another book which has more information while we are actually visiting the site (28 pages). DK Tours are organized & we use them for planning.

3. The sections of the DK books are produced so they open almost completely flat. The spines hold up well. If you open other guide books all the way until they are flat, the spines will often crack or split.

4. Pictures are small, but gorgeous and give you a quick delicious overview of what to expect. Most of us will be taking pictures of our own so you only need the ones in the book for your own reference before and after your trip.

1. Maps are presented for a specific road from one point to another with few details in between. Additional information (GPS) and another map will be needed, but the maps included in this DK guide will orient you from point A to point B.

2. The paper of these books is high quality and while they are nice to read they are quite heavy to lug around. We read and refer to them between points of interest and generally leave them in our accommodations and take another guide with us.

This book is one of three that we will be taking on our trip. We always take a very detailed map and for this trip we purchased a National Geographic map plus an up-to-date GPS of turkey. I will edit my reviews when I return.

This is a good book. It gives better understanding about the country's history, culture, places to visit, places to stay, etc.
The maps need improvement and hard to see those.

This was a great guide - as with all the series, great summaries, maps, pictures and cut-aways. These are "must have" guides. They are ACCURATE, culturally sensitive, and useful - what more could you ask?
