3.0 out of 5 stars What happened to the anti-hero?, April 1 2012
By Michael S Katz - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Daken: Dark Wolverine: The Pride Comes Before The Fall (Hardcover)
I started out reading this character's books because I thought he was a really interesting antihero, but I have trouble seeing Daken in the same light now. I just left a review for the novel The 13th Zookeeper by Bernd Struben because someone else was complaining about the lead character being too violent and evil. That put me in mind of Daken, so I picked up his latest collection, which I had been eagerly awaiting because of the mystery: who was the Claws Killer? Daken or someone framing him.

In comparison to The 13th Zookeeper, Daken started out as a more obvious antihero, like a John Constantine, but as his series has progressed he has become much less of a hero and much more of a villain. What he did in Madripoor was bad enough, but what he did in L.A. was even worse--killing innocents and cops? What happened to the Daken who hung out with the Fantastic Four? Maybe that's why the series has been canceled, they took the character too far in the wrong direction. The bisexual stuff confuses me, too, because it is hard to tell if he is serious or just using people. But although it makes me uncomfortable it doesn't keep me from reading.

I still liked the book, mainly because of the guest stars (although Moon Knight's mental issues had me a little confused). The art was uneven, but the good pages were good, reminded me of Invincible. I'll finish off following Daken's story because I know it will be ending, but if it was going to continue I probably would have stopped by now.
