About the Author
I am just a simple Buddhist monk, no more, no less
As his name suggests, the his Holiness the Dalai Lamas teachings are considered an ocean of wisdom by millions of Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
Born into a peasant family, he was identified at the age of two as the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama, and began a monastic education at the age of six. Having gained a doctorate of Buddhist philosophy he assumed political power and attempted to join peace talks with Mao Tse-tung. In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and won worldwide praise for his devotion to a non-violent liberation of Tibet. His writings cross cultural and political boundaries, assessing contemporary difficulties through a lens of traditional Buddhist spiritual thought.
The Dalai Lama lives in a small cottage in Dharamsala, and rises every day at 4am to meditate and fulfil his role of religious teacher, both inside and out of his own community.
