Superintendent Andy Dalziel is no typical supersleuth; though canny and observant, he's also crude and pushy to the point of brutish--but in the hands of Warren Clarke, the lumpy yet charismatic actor who plays Dalziel, he's the driving force of a very-long-lived British crime series. His partner is Detective Inspector Peter Pascoe (Colin Buchanan), who approaches crime from a more educated, intellectual perspective. It's a classic pairing of opposites that drives these cunning mysteries. Dalziel and Pascoe: The First Season includes three episodes: "A Clubbable Woman," about sexual high jinks and murder among the members of a rugby club; "An Advancement of Learning," about sexual high jinks and murder at a university; and "An Autumn Shroud," about sexual high jinks and murder at a country estate. Surprisingly, despite the broad similarities of the shows, each episode is sneaky and colorful, full of winding turns and vivid characters (played by guest stars like Prunella Scales of Fawlty Towers and Francesca Annis of Reckless and The Libertine). But make no mistake, this is Clarke's show. Clarke makes Dalziel completely engaging even though the policeman can be downright mean in his drive to figure things out. It's a fascinatingly real performance, full of warts and wrinkles, revealing a piercing intelligence and granite integrity. For anyone who enjoys murder mysteries, Clarke is not to be missed. --Bret Fetzer

Excellent police procedural,

My wife and I have been huge fans of Reginald Hill's written output. Humourous with many a plot twist. The two main characters are fairly well opposite in personality, yet work well together towards a common goal, and the actors do a great job of capturing their personalities as portrayed in the books. I have just ordered season two and am looking forward to it's arrival.

Season One is fabulous. The stories are well written and the actors are wonderful. Warren Clarke is superb as Andy Dalziel the hard nosed police inspector with a sense of humour and a dash of sarcasm. His partner Peter Pascoe takes more than a few ribbings and the interaction between the two makes for great fun. The stories are also very interesting with many twists and turns. My only complaint is that there are just three episodes in Season One. I've already signed up for Season Two and can't wait 'til it comes out. Pure enjoyment!!

This is only 3 episodes, but they were throughly enjoyable. I got my copy from Costco for $20, so it's going to hurt to pay the Amazon price of $32 for the next few.
