A perfect follow-up to CRUSADE., Dec 23 2011

don't always get to finish series. There are so many books coming out that sequels and series aren't usually a priority for me. But there are some authors whose work I'll always read, and some series that I absolutely must finish. Even when they are giant, 500-page tomes.DAMNED is one of these books -- the second book in Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguié`s CRUSADE trilogy. The series incorporates world religions, often Catholic mythology and Wicca, in building its post-apocalyptic world. A world in which vampires -- or Cursed Ones -- have "come out," claimed nations, and now have subversively taken over many of the world's governments -- including the United States.
That's where the Salamancan Hunters come in. Lead by Californian Jenn Leitner, this group is based in Spain, one of the world's last hold-outs. Having just returned from a difficult mission in New Orleans, Team Salamanca is ready to get back to life as usual (as "usual" as life can be, considering that they are church-sanctioned vampire-hunting mercenaries with a witch, a werewolf, and a repentant vampire on the team). Of course, that's when they find out that one of the most legendary of vampires is up to no good in Russia, experimenting on humans, vampires, and werewolves, in hopes of creating a super-soldier for the Cursed Ones' cause. The Salamancan's old nemesis Aurora isn't too far out of the picture yet, either, and it won't belong before she turns Jenn and her companions' life upside down in a way they never dreamed possible.
Again weaving together romance and action flawlessly, DAMNED is a perfect follow-up to CRUSADE. The large cast and shifting perspectives are tightly written, and as with CRUSADE, the vampire apocalypse is a welcome change from the current cannon. I love these characters, their many complexities, and the secrets they have yet to reveal. I cannot wait for the third book in this series, and I highly recommend checking out the first two as soon as you get the chance!

Review: If there is one thing I can say for sure about this series, you will never have a dull moment while reading! The story is fast-paced and the action is off the charts! This is one of those books where you feel exhausted after reading certain scenes. I needed to take a break just to catch my breath!I mentioned before in my Crusade review that this is like an adult series with YA characters. That idea continued for me during this book. Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie wrote scenes that are so detailed and dramatic! It really reminds me of something you would find in some great paranormal adult novels. Plus, this series doesn't just revolve around a few characters. We are able to read about an entire group of characters -- Jenn, Antonio, Jamie, Eriko, Skye, Holgar, Father Juan-- so many involved with Team Salamanca. Each character is so different, which I guess is why they make such a great team. Their strengths and weaknesses balance out perfectly.
Of course, the main characters here are Jenn and Antonio. There are so many drastic differences between the Jenn we meet at the beginning of Crusade, and the Jenn at the end of Damned. She has matured so much. She is now 100% hunter! She seems to be at the point where she can tackle anything head-on.
Antonio is difficult to describe because he is so complex. He has lived a very long life, and as a vampire, he has struggled with things much more than the others. I could picture looking at him and just seeing a soul with thousands of stories. His level of compassion and commitment to Jenn and the team is inspiring. There is no denying the love he feels for Jenn or the lengths he would go to in order to keep her safe.
This series provides a shifting point-of-view, which is actually nice. Although, at the same time, it could get a bit distracting. That could just be me though because during certain parts I would get so into the story I wouldn't want it to shift to another character at that moment.
If you are looking for a kick-butt paranormal story with several multidimensional characters, you gotta pick up this one! Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie have created a fascinating world readers will quickly jump into.

I NEVER FINISHED READING THIS BOOK. IT DID NOT KEEP ME INTERESTED AT ALL. IT WAS BORING AND THE CHARACTERS WHERE SO DULL AND FLAT. SO I NEVER MADE IT PAST CHAPTER 2.
