5.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Film! Dec 28 2008
By James Gallen TOP 100 REVIEWER
Looking for a movie that is funny, engaging, and clean and gets you thinking? If so, "Dan In Real Life" is it! Dan (Steve Carell) is an advice columnist who, despite the help he provides to his readers, is floundering as a single parent raising three daughters. When they head to a Rhode Island beachfront cottage for an extended family vacation, things really get tangled. Sent by his mother to get the newspaper, this widower meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) in the book section. They are immediately attracted to each other. Upon his return to the cottage, Dan finds that Marie is his brother's new girl friend. You can imagine, well no, you really can't, where this all leads. I better not give more details so as not to ruin it for you, but trust me, you will emphasize with the characters, share their moods and have an overall delightful time.

I'm not sure why I'm not giving this 5 stars because I totally enjoyed it - but when I think about it - I think there were some holes in the storyline that didn't sit well with me, but other than that - this an excellent feel good movie.

I know Steve Carell plays some shallow characters in the comedies he's acted in - but he is really quite charming and actually loveable in this movie. I was rooting for him all the way - even when he was acting like a jerk.

Steve Carell plays a widower with 3 daughters who is a family advice columnist - but he has significant problems disciplining his own daughters and they don't like him very much! I don't want to give too much away - but I love the irony in that Steve forbids his one daughter to see a boy who she has fallen in love with and forbids another daughter from driving - and then proceeds to fall in love with a stranger he barely knows and goes to hilarious and desperate lengths to win her over even though she is his brother's girlfriend, and he gets involved in a number of accidents and has his drivers license revoked! Everything takes place during Thanksgiving at his parents' house which is full of siblings, spouses, and kids everywhere. There are people all over the place!

I thought the chemistry between Steve's character and Juliette Binoche (who had a fairly convincing American accent, but I can still tell she's French) was very real - they are both excellent actors. Steve does some unkind, goofy things to win her over - but I thought it was believable because he was so lonely and had so much stress with his daughters that I believed he'd go a little overboard to obtain the object of his desire.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dan in real life Aug. 1 2008
Romantic comedies... as a manly man, I'm always sceptical about those.

But as a Steve Carell fan, I just had to check this one out. And even more so since he's paired with la magnifique Juliette Binoche. A combo from heaven! And the support cast is excellent also.

The storyline is a bit predictable but it is still very well written. Peter Hedges did an excellent job directing this movie, creating a perfect setting for this story.
