Steve Carell (THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN, TV's THE OFFICE), Hollywood's leading funnyman, stars in the hilarious comedy that's bursting with charm -- a movie you'll watch again and again. Advice columnist Dan Burns (Carell) is an expert on relationships, but somehow struggles to succeed as a brother, a son and a single parent to three precocious daughters. Things get even more complicated when Dan finds out that the woman he falls in love with is actually his brother's new girlfriend. Carell is joined by a brilliant all-star supporting cast, including Juliette Binoche, Dane Cook, John Mahoney and Dianne Wiest, for a heartfelt, fun-filled comedy that's "laugh-out-loud funny" -- Steve Oldfield, FOX.

I know Steve Carell plays some shallow characters in the comedies he's acted in - but he is really quite charming and actually loveable in this movie. I was rooting for him all the way - even when he was acting like a jerk.
Steve Carell plays a widower with 3 daughters who is a family advice columnist - but he has significant problems disciplining his own daughters and they don't like him very much! I don't want to give too much away - but I love the irony in that Steve forbids his one daughter to see a boy who she has fallen in love with and forbids another daughter from driving - and then proceeds to fall in love with a stranger he barely knows and goes to hilarious and desperate lengths to win her over even though she is his brother's girlfriend, and he gets involved in a number of accidents and has his drivers license revoked! Everything takes place during Thanksgiving at his parents' house which is full of siblings, spouses, and kids everywhere. There are people all over the place!
I thought the chemistry between Steve's character and Juliette Binoche (who had a fairly convincing American accent, but I can still tell she's French) was very real - they are both excellent actors. Steve does some unkind, goofy things to win her over - but I thought it was believable because he was so lonely and had so much stress with his daughters that I believed he'd go a little overboard to obtain the object of his desire.Read more ›
But as a Steve Carell fan, I just had to check this one out. And even more so since he's paired with la magnifique Juliette Binoche. A combo from heaven! And the support cast is excellent also.
The storyline is a bit predictable but it is still very well written. Peter Hedges did an excellent job directing this movie, creating a perfect setting for this story.
