Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The always reliable team of Preston and Child revisit Special FBI Agent Aloysius Pendergast, last seen in 2004's Brimstone, and others from past bestsellers (Relic; The Cabinet of Curiosities) in this intriguing thriller set in and around New York City and the halls of the Museum of Natural History. Born a misanthropic loner but driven insane by seeing his parents burned alive when he was a teen, Aloysius's madman brother, Diogenes, has begun murdering Aloysius's friends. Aloysius begs old friend Lt. Vincent D'Agosta to help him defeat his brother, and Vincent does his best while the brothers spar and others die. There are a number of subplots, one involving an ATM robber and flasher known as the Dangler and another focusing on the museum's exhibition of sacred masks, but these fade away as the deadly duel between the brothers takes center stage. Think Sherlock Holmes locked in a death struggle with his smarter brother, Mycroft. Like Brimstone, this novel doesn't end so much as simply pause while the authors work on the next installment. While it's not as good as some of their earlier efforts, it's still pretty darn good.

From Booklist

Picking up two months after the events chronicled in Brimstone (2004), which saw the untimely demise of popular series hero FBI Special Agent Pendergast, this new novel by the Preston-Child team brings together characters from previous novels. The people closest to Pendergast are dying in horrible ways, and only one man can be responsible: Diogenes, Pendergast's long-lost brother, who has supposedly been dead for years. Meanwhile, at the New York Museum of Natural History, an internal battle rages over the rightful ownership of some ancient relics. Will these two stories link up? Well, of course, no surprise there. It's how they link up that packs the surprises. This is an ambitious novel with a gimmicky plot that could have landed with a resounding thud. Instead, the story soars; the cast of familiar characters--researcher Margo Green, journalist Bill Smithback, curator Nora Kelly--is given a chance to stretch, and the authors deliver an exhilarating finale. Good stuff, and there's more to come, as the novel's last lines make clear. David Pitt

I got an advance copy! Which was very cool because it was signed by the authors. I must admit I cannot be an objective reviewer when it comes to this writing team, they are awesome! In Dance of Death FBI Special Agent, Aloysius Pendergast (from Brimstone, Cabinet of Curiosities) is back in action. He is up against his Evil, diabolical brother Diogenes, who is murdering Aloysius's friends, and framing the murders on Aloysius! Pendergast ends up on the run from the Feds while he tries to figure out a way to defeat his evil brother, who is always one step ahead of him.

This is typical Preston/Childs non-stop action with plenty of twists and turns. If I were to fault the book at all is it does not develop the historical/archeological/scientific plot typically found in earlier novels-which I always enjoy. New York City and the hall of the Museum of Natural History does play a role but this quickly fades in importance as the "dance of death" between the brothers plays out. The monumental struggle between the two brothers however-an epic fight between good and evil-is more than enough to carry the story. I also think the ending could have been a tad better, but it is also a great set up for the next book!

All in all this is another great Preston/Childs collaboration that fans will be pleased with (it is worth the hardback price).

2.0 out of 5 stars Diluted...Diluted...Diluted...and, yet, Diluted AGAIN!!, Sep 6 2007

OK, this is ridiculous! These guys had to work with an excellent character (refined, rich, supersmart special agent Pendergast), his mirror-image villain (true, a little too mirror image for my taste...) and a decent story - and, yet, managed to ruin the whole thing by turning a one-book-story into a trilogy!

There are chapters and whole subplots with only marginal impact on the storytelling - chapters that could had been easily omitted.
For example (no spoiler, not to worry): Smithback gets committed to an insane asylum, attempts to escape, manages to do so so easily he could be simply exiting a ...hotel! Value added to the story: zero.

They most probably did not telephone this one in, yet there are plot corners left unfinished. Diogene's motive is at best shallow and unworthy of his intellect for example...

OK for a gloomy weekend, but definitely NOT ONE OF THEIR GOOD ONES!

2.0 out of 5 stars Rip-off, May 7 2008

These authors have no shame... and no respect for their readers! This book is just a long, drawn-out excuse to make another quick buck. Not just with this pretentiously written story which just won't end, literally, but also, they calculate, with the follow-up Part II which readers who are only interested in the dénouement will necessarilly have to buy, poor suckers. I struggled through the low-grade humour and attempts at wit, from a couple of writers with much less class than they seem to think they have. Like where do they get off writing a long two pages to make fun of a midwesterner who happens not to know that in a French restaurant, a 'steak tartare' is served uncooked. Big deal! What does that have to do with anything?
