Product Description

From Library Journal

"Mitch" Mitchell and her 11-year-old son return to northern Michigan to take over her dead father's cafe. The pair discover a mystery surrounding the disappearance and possible death of her hitherto unknown Indian grandfather and decide to investigate. Their search for a disused flooded copper mine, where Mitch hopes to dive for clues, lands them in trouble with drug punks, a military survivalist group, and assorted locals. Intimate moments of mother-son bonding, electrifying chase scenes, and personal epiphanies add to the pull of the North Woods. A highly recommended work from the author of Black Water (St. Martin's, 1996).

In his third Mitch Mitchell novel, Allyn intertwines an examination of parent/child relationships with an engaging puzzle to create a work of suspense and psychological depth. When Mitch decides to reconnect with her estranged young son, she embarks on an emotional journey that forces her to face disturbing truths about her mother's troubling death several years ago.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story-weak characterizations odf secondary characters, Dec 1 1997

For years, Michelle "Mitch" Mitchell has left her son at a boarding school while she earns a living, diving off of oil rigs in the Gulf Coast. When her father dies, Mitch inherits a restaurant along the shore of Lake Huron. She decides it is time for mother and son to have the relationship they never had, so she brings eleven year old Corey to the Michigan Upper Peninsula to live with her.

Their relationship is,at first, very strained to say the least. In a desperate attempt to reach her son, Mitch takes him on a camping trip. While on the road, she starts to wonder about her own parents, especially her deceased mother. Tracking her mother's path leads to a series of perilous encounters with several dangerous groups of people and canines. However, what's a mother to do except protect her cub even as she tries to reach out to him.

A DANCE IN DEEP WATER is the third entry in the well written "Mitch" series. However, although thee novel is good,it's not quite as enjoyable as the previosu two tales (ICEWATER MANSIONS and BLACK WATER). Mitch remains an endearing character and the story line is loaded with soul searching adventure. What undermines the book a bit is that the support cast, including Cory, come across as caricatures of stereotypes rather than characters. Still, Doug Allyn is able to overcome that with a brilliant plot and the marvelous Mitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Dance in Deep Water, Oct 28 2011

Although I purchased this book several years ago, and had great expectations because I had read other books by the same author, for some reason this book never arrived. I have not forgotten. How grievously disappointing! Mr. Allyn is a local author and the book is unavailable at the library. I have looked in several brick-and-mortar bookstores since my purchase. If it were possible, I would still like to read the novel. I may need to buy it again. His two previous stories in this series of three are extra fascinating, because they take place IN the Great Lakes!

4.0 out of 5 stars I like Mitch!, Jan 9 2006

Allyn knows how to write a strong, independent woman with a sense of humor and her own insecurities. I liked that Mitch was as much trying to solve her personal mysteries and the external one in which she becomes involved. The supporting characters are developed more with each book, which is a small fault. But Allyn does a very good job at providing a sense of place and building suspense. This is a very enjoyable series and one I recommend.
