...a real winner. In it are elements that should tempt the most discerning reader of fiction. -- The Cincinnati Enquirer, April 24, 1983

A thriller in elegant attire.... Strong and authoritative writing teamed with unrelenting suspense. -- The Denver Post, May 20, 1984

Fast-paced.... Engrossing. -- New York Daily News, May 29, 1983

Book Description

On June 4, 1982, the body of a young woman surfaced from 300 feet of water in Lake Placid, New York. Because of the depth and intense cold of the water, the body, which was determined by medical examiners to have been submerged for over twenty years, was remarkably well-preserved. At the time, the authorities were unable to establish the identity of the woman but concluded that her death had been violent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get by the glaring error, May 9 2004
By
Tom Bruce (Brooklyn, New York United States) - See all my reviews
The book begins and then builds to the same climax: A execution by electric chair in New York State in 1986. The problem: New York State executions were suspended from 1977 to 1995. The author should have know this: He was a former FBI agent and he lives in New York State, where pro and anti execution stances were hot political issues of the time. Otherwise, the story is terrific with twists and turns that should keep the reader spellbound until the very end. In fact, it's hard to elaborate on the plot without ruining the surprises within. It's a well crafted tale and perfect beach reading. But, every time the author returns to discuss the state held executions he loses me. I become focused on this glaring error instead of the story he so expertly weaves. Why didn't he set this story in a state that had executions? Why didn't he set this story when executions were allowed in New York State? Why did he muddy the water with a tale based around a total impossibility? If you can get by this editorial faux pas, then this is a story I would give four stars. But, I couldn't get by it; it ruined for me what would have been a fine book.

I really enjoyed the book. This book got me hooked into mysteries. The story is very engaging, I couldn't put it down. The story leads you through lots of turns and twists and gets you in the end. Highly enjoyable read!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good and engaging suspense, April 9 1999

The storyline was very engaging. Extraordinary suspense and very well developed characters. The descriptions of the surroundings and the ambience are probably some of the best I have ever read in mystery books. Uncanny ability to transport the reader to the scene into the plot. My only dissapointment was the end felt rush. With his writing talent, I would had expected a fenomenal psychological and trial courtroom drama ("Pressumed Inoccent" type). I am looking forward to read more of Mr. Conners's work. Definitely a great mistery writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kept the pages turning, July 9 2004

I bought this book while I was camping in Lake Placid. I have to admit that I was I was intrigued and surprised by the ending. Throughout the entire book I thought one character murdered the young girl and it was not until the end that it all came together. Good pacing and definately worth your time.
