About the Author

Wil Wheaton may be one of the most unusual celebrities of our time. Born into stardom with the movie "Stand By Me", and then growing up on television as Wesley Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Wil was in the spotlight nearly his entire childhood. Instead of burning out as a child star, he left fame behind and became a computer specialist in what Hollywood might consider the middle of nowhere: Topeka, Kansas. Now, Wil considers himself "just a geek", and both Dancing Barefoot and the forthcoming biography Just a Geek are about his journey in rediscovering himself and coming to terms with what it means to be famous, or, ironically, famous for being previously famous.

Many people think of Wil Wheaton as that kid from Stand By Me or that geeky acting ensign on Star Trek. Many people don't think of him at all. However, many more of us (more and more as time goes on) have gotten to know a different side of Mr. Wheaton through his website. We have been with him through his frustrations as an actor in Hollywood, his joys and sorrows as a parent and husband, through his trials with Star Trek and William F'ing Shatner, and have been amazed by the truly personal and wonderful things he has shared through his blog.

Those of us who have been devotees of his website have known for a long time what a terrific writer (and person!) Wil Wheaton is. Now he has decided to share his talent and stories with us in book form. I ordered this book the minute he started offering it for sale, even though I knew most of the material I had already read on his site. I read through it in one sitting. I was not displeased. The stories range from hilarious, to whimsical and nostalgic, to downright tearjerking. Though I had read them before they were just as resonant as the first time I had seen them. He has also finished up the Saga of SpongeBob VegasPants that he had teased us with on his website but never gave us the ending to. It would have been worth it just for that.

I am not as eloquent as some of the others who have reviewed his book, and especially not as much as the man himself. But I just have to say that I am amazed by this book and so proud of this man who has let so many of us into his life as no other celebrity has before and made us all feel like friends (but not stalkers or anything. I swear!). I, for one, cannot wait for his next book, Just a Geek, to come out.

I bought Dancing Barefoot when Wil first self published it. Later at a book signing, he gave me a second copy. The day it was released by O'Reilly I bought another one here on Amazon. I love this book so much that I've loaned it to numerous other people who also love it. Wil is a geek like me. Wil is a great story teller. It's almost impossibly to believe that these are the stories that were cut out of Just a Geek. You can't read just one, so buy a few.

I really enjoyed all of the stories in 'Dancing Barefoot'. This collection turned out well. His stories are interesting, moving, and emotional. He connects with his readers and allows us some of our own reflection, jumping off from the experiences he writes of, to those of our own memories. Having read Just A Geek, I could tell that the two were written around the same time - in tone, the two are similar, and the stories are relevant to same period in his life that Wheaton writes about in Just A Geek. While not necessarily having to be companion pieces, they compliment each other.

This type of personal writing is a genre that I find particularly interesting. While I love fiction, I have a certain curiosity about other people's lives, what they struggle with, what they find comfort in, how they live their lives.

Overall, a really enjoyable book of short stories, well written and captivating.
