Product Description

“Boo Davis is a rock star! Dare to Be Square Quilting is the perfect patchwork primer for beginners and a refreshing review for experienced quilters. A must-have book for any quilt or craft library.” --Denyse Schmidt (author of Denyse Schmidt Quilts)

. . . My approach to quilting is an approach for true beginners. I don’t like triangles, circles, hexagons, diamonds, rhombuses, or any shape that makes measuring a chore. (Can we stop right here and ponder the word rhombus? Man, that word is hilarious.) In this book, every project is designed using only squares and rectangles. Why just squares and rectangles? Because straight seams are easy to stitch!

Craft a modern quilt with independent quilt-maker Boo Davis, whose fun, slightly quirky designs take quilts into new graphic territory. Using only simple shapes like rectangles and squares you’ll see robots, skulls, alarm clocks, and owls come to life as fabulous, full-size quilts. With 10 charming quilt patterns, and 15 eye-popping patchwork projects perfect for afternoon or weekend crafting, Dare to Be Square Quilting reinterprets quilt traditions such as basket weave, rail fence, and housetop designs in a bold new way. With advice on color and fabric selection, and an extensive how-to section on quilting, Davis teaches the fastest, simplest, and most reliable methods modern quilting has to offer.

Dare to make a quilt that’s funny, fabulous, and from the heart . . . Dare to be square!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, modern, geometrical, Jun 22 2011

This review is from: Dare to Be Square Quilting: A Block-by-Block Guide to Making Patchwork and Quilts (Paperback)
As the name implies, all the projects in this book are based on squares and rectangles and quilted with straight lines. They share a quirky, modern style but the author shows that they are all based on traditional blocks.

The first section of this book is a mini quilting course for beginners.

There are 10 full-sized quilts:
-skull with basketweave background
-twisty design reminiscent of a rock poster
-robot with brickwork background
-deer
-abstract tree
-speech bubbles
-alarm clock
-skeleton keys
-owl (cover photo)
-blocks with optional embroidered faces

2 baby quilts:
-snail playmat
-wiener dog quilt

and a few accessory/home projects:
-oilcloth book cover
-patchwork scarf
-op art floor pillow
-buildings pillow
-chain table runner
-chain placemats
-plus-sign potholders
-plus-sign apron
-greeting cards
-graphic grocery bag
-rabbit softie with glasses and button eyes

I haven't actually made anything from the book yet, but the layout and directions seem very clear and contain a lot of helpful tips. I like how the author encourages readers to use scraps.

My only criticism is that everything is shown one way only (one technique, one colour scheme) and a couple of the projects seem like filler- particularly the book cover, which is overly simple and uses a different fabric than the rest of the projects.

Awesome book. Great for beginners of the younger generation who want to make hip quilts. Also for the more advance quilters for ideas to add to their skills. I was very impressed with the modern art approach of making everyday designs with strips. Each quilt tells a story. Good color combinations. Easy to understand directions.
The owl is quite wise I will make him first.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the stupid quilter!, Feb 10 2011

Ok, so I know you're not stupid, but I totally was about quilting! I tried watching videos online, reading tutorials and asking for advice and everything was just so confusing, then I bought this book and I can make a quilt. Seriously! Boo makes it so easy to understand by using not just print but diagrams as well. She also throws in a tiny bit of humor to keep you interested. I completely understood her instructions even when reading with a fever...and I'm pretty brain dead when I'm sick. Make sure to read the book from beginning to end! She gives so much helpful advice and many unconventional, but inspired ideas about construction. The quilts themselves are pretty awesome, as are the patchwork projects provided. I love the fact that Boo isn't some stuffy 60 year old trying to force us to make an art piece to be admired, not touched; she is all about using and loving your quilt until it falls to pieces in 150 years. I also LOVE her simple, user-friendly binding method. It's simplistic and totally modern and in the now. I was DYING to know what kinds of quilt designs were in this book and didn't like the mystery...I HATE surprises, but a complete list wasn't available. I'll try to label them as best as I can. These are NOT the given names of the quilt, just what they are in layman's terms:

Owl Quilt
Robot Quilt
Key Quilt
Tree Quilt (this one is a little weird because it's all squares, but cute anyway)
Alarm clock Quilt
Wiener Dog Baby Quilt
Deer/Stag Quilt
Skull Quilt
And 3 Modern Blocked Patterned Quilts

There are also "how-to's" on pot holders, an apron, a scarf, place mats, a table runner and MORE! BUY THIS BOOK! You won't be disappointed, I promise!

I have never quilted before, but when I saw the video for this book on vimeo, I had to have it. The quilts are super cool, and her instructions are VERY detailed. Be sure to read the introduction. She has a lot of detail there that will help you out, especially if you are a beginner. I am beginning my first quilt--the blue robot--and everything I need to know is in the book.
