I really enjoyed reading all of the Marvel books that fell under and were touched by the Dark Reign story arc that began at the end of Secret Invasion. For those who missed this book, you'll probably want to pick it up and read that first, so you can understand how Norman Osborn (aka The Green Goblin) came to be in charge of keeping peace in the United States. Unlike most Marvel events, Dark Reign has no core mini-series around which all the tie-in books orbit. Instead, Marvel concurrently ran several small mini-series that are all, essentially, tie-in books to the big theme of the bad guys taking control of the enforcement power in the United States. Along with this, several of the core Marvel books adopted new titles with the adjective "Dark" preceding the regular title, so we had Dark Wolverine (Dark Wolverine Vol. 1: The Prince), Dark X-Men (Dark X-Men), and, of course, the flagship title of Dark Avengers.
Though I read each of the Dark Avengers TPBs as they came out, I hoped one day that the entire run would be collected into one edition, and Marvel finally gave me my wish with this book. Showcasing Norman Osborne's creation of the team, their series of (few) missions, the internal strife between team members, the events that led up to their assault of Asgard (you can follow this particular story in Siege), and their fallout, destruction and arrest, this book has it all and is an excellent piece of fiction. Though no one wants villains to win forever, having the villains take over (temporarily) and run the country according to their own whims and desires is just an incredible amount of fun.
This book is engaging from start to finish - particulary the colorful banter between the villains that is inevitable when so many big egos are stuck together in the same room. Bendis must have really enjoyed writing this book, and the way he handles the characters is masterful. I especially liked his characterization of Moonstone, Norman Osborn, and The Sentry.
Want a comic book that doesn't disappoint? This is it! It's got action, romance, subterfuge, humor - all with a evil twist. A terrific book and a good value, besides!
