5.0 out of 5 stars Great take on d20 modern, Oct 14 2003

This review is from: Dark Inheritance (Hardcover)
This review is coming from a veteran rpg'er.
This supplement campaign world to Wizards' D20 Modern core rules is great. It gives complete, balanced rules for playing characters that are like their human brothers, but have a genetic link to the gods of the past. Not only are new regular/prestige/advanced classes, new feats, new occupations, new items, etc etc etc given, powers of the titans(the god-gene inheritors) are given for each distinct legacy. What may be best about this book is the complete background history and state of the world and organizations that are competing for control and knowledge of the events that led to the formation of this campaign world. I don't want to give everything away, so you'll have to buy the book to find out more. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone that wants to play a campaign in a world abruptly changed by an event that unleashes great powers onto an unsuspecting modern world.

I had been eyeballing this book for a while, mostly because it sounded like a detailed supers game for d20. Now, I own and enjoy Aberrant, mostly due to the rich backstory. But I am always in the market for a new 'supers' game.

This book does NOT disappoint: very sturdy edition, great layout, some amazing stylized artwork, and a very cool representation of super-powered characters. The powers system is a simple cross of d20 psionics with standard Feat trees (read: very simple with a core mechanic system instead of each power standing on its own a la Aberrant, Mutants and Masterminds, et al). The back story is very layered, and each vision includes a list of book, film, and comic references for inspiration. And I would add one more to their list - I Am Number Four. The game mechanics appear to have been heavily influenced by IAN4, and that is a great thing in my opinion.

If you need a new slant on your on-going d20 Modern game, you could do a lot worse than picking up a copy of Dark Inheritance, even if you just want some new Alliances, Occupations, Skills and Feats, all sans-powers. If I weren't busy play-testing my own games for release, I'd probably strong arm my crew into playing this. Dark Inheritance sets a bar for what should be the quality of release for all modern-era RPGs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent D20 addition, April 10 2009

When I first bought the D20 portion of the D&D series, I was unaware that so much was going to change!

Luckily this book adds some excellent characters along with attributes and scenarios. I would highly recommend this for any collection, it is worth the money.
