In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.
The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

This review is from: Dark Lover: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood (Mass Market Paperback)
Move over Sherrilyn Kenyon, Dark Hunter series author. J.R. Ward has written an addictive debut novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.I am a recent convert to the 'paranormal romance' genre, and have read many. This novel comes close to being the best I have read. Don't be put off by the glossary at the front of the book, I actually appreciated the gesture of the author to include it as a start to her series. Not only are the main characters filled out nicely, but glimpses at the secondary characters leave the reader wanting more. I want Zsadist's book.

Love at first sight is the definite canvas for each book in this serie (I read the first 3 books and they are pretty much built on the same frame). The story's based on the raw and sexual emotions of the 2 protagonist, a woman and a vampire warrior (I should had without censorship) and the trials surrounding the vampire race, it's protectors (the warriors) and the race's mortal enemies, the slayers. The story is relatively simple but effective and one thing I definitely like is the no-nonsense of the characters. For starters, when Beth (the protagonist) figures not long into the story she might actually be in danger and her mysterious counterpart, Wrath is the only one who can help her, she goes to him ; she doesn't stand there until trouble knocks on her door. I felt the characters made descent decisions and since there wasn't much doubts on their thoughts and actions, the story had a great fluidity. What I didn't like was the choice of naming the author gave to the vampires of her story. Maybe J.R. Ward felt it would make them look more dangerous but beside the awful cheese factor the unfortunate side-effect is that it makes the characters one dimensionnal and I passed at least the first 100 pages trying not to roll my eyes about it. From the naming, you know Phury is gonna be the passionnate one, Rhage has a beast inside of him and what-do-you-know? Therror doesn't have a voice. Don't get me wrong ; the character development is pretty descent, each books get to develop one in interesting ways but it was hard for me to get into the story at first because of that. Ah yes, also the way they are written doesn't help at all (the random "H"'s and "PH"'s thrown in the name to make it look even more badass misses the point completely). But once you get used to that, the story and the world Ward created is interesting and sexy, the pacing is great and overall it will leave you wanting more.
