The first book I read of Feehan was Dark Magic about 5 years ago and I loved it so I thought I'll go ahead and look for the rest of the series but start from scratch. Then I forgot about it and years later I found them again. I decided to start from the beginning. Dark Prince was a real disappointment to me. I liked Mikhail but I hated Raven, I found her extremely annoying and half the time I just wanted to kick her. I don't understand how Mikhail even falls for her. Anyway, the plot was okay and didn't expect much because this book was after all the "introduction" to the rest of the series. Still, I think she could have done better.

The Dark Prince was the first Christine Feehan book I read. Since then I have gone on to buy and read everything published, and reread all of them. The book is thick, overwrought, dramatic and maybe a bit silly, but impossible to put down. It is the foundation for all the other lovely books about those sexy Carpathian men.
The author's cut version is interesting. On one hand it is better than the version I read but also shows what a good editor can do to present a novel.
For those of us who were fascinated with the character of Gregori, he is a much more prominent character in this version. The relationship between Mikail and Gregori makes better sense and Raven's affection for him is better understood. Raven is more interesting as she was originally written and I liked her backbone and intelligence in this version more than the edited Raven. The nature of the Carpathian male is clearer. Feehan was creating a creature as much animal as man, and this is more clear when you read what she originally put on the page. The necessity for the female to balance the "dark" nature of the male is better understood.
On the other hand, there is a lot of extraneous exposition, particularly toward the end. I can see why an editor suggested she tighten it up a bit. I am delighted I bought this version and it is the one I will reread from now on.But I might give someone new to the series the edited version, particularly if they have a smaller tolerance for molten lava, hot silk and purple prose.
