I remember when I was younger I watched some of the later episodes that they had already put into syndication - I never saw the earlier episodes. I decided to start my Dark Shadows collection and I am enjoying the videos immensely!

I especially like the interviews included, and the opening episode with original commercials is a time capsule. It's great too that the materials also include websites where you can find further resources and related products.

With Dark Shadows: The Beginning you enter the strange world of the Collins Family. This is pre vampire Barnabas Collins and it is a suspenseful story about Governous Victoria Winters arrival in Collinsport. Victoria was hired Primarily to work for the Collins family at the mysterious mansion, Collinwood. Unknowingly to anyone Victoria Winters is seeking her identity. At Collinwood, Victoria meets reclusive matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, her daughter Carolyn, her brother Roger and his troubled 10 year old son David.

There is a twist in the story as an enemy of the Collins family Burke Devlin returns to Collinsport rich and seeking to destroy the Collins Family and threaten to tell the truth of what happened 10 years prior between Roger Collins, Laura Collins and himself.

I started watching Dark Shadows as the character of Barnabas Collins was introduced and realized very quickly that wanted to see how the series originated.

I highly recommend beginning at the beginning.

The writing and characters are much more interesting and complex in that the series couldn't yet depend on the classic "monster" threads that it eventually became infamous for. There is a great feeling of dread and suspense as the troubled and all too human characters move about and head down a mysterious road to.....what?

Good writing and good performances. Roger, Carolyn, and even Elizabeth are stronger and more compelling than later in the series. David is very disturbing and Matthew the caretaker adds a sense of the past and a feeling that so much has gone on at Collinwood over the years before we, the audience, have been allowed on the grounds.

Start here.....it's the only way.
