Unfortunately, this set does not contain the extra footage in the pilot episode that was included in the VHS releases. It is also a bare-bones release, meaning just the show as it appeared on TV, no extras.
But this is a very welcome release, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this show again. I have to agree, it probably would have been a hit series if not for programming difficulties due to the Gulf War. I remember trying to follow the show when it was originally aired, and I had a hard time keeping up when I was actively looking for the show. For a more casual viewer, it would have been next to impossible!
The show follows the plotline of the original DARK SHADOWS first Barnabas storyline for the first 6 episodes, and then tells the 1795 flashback (here 1790) for the rest, with the characters in the past being played by the same actors as those in the present. It's too bad the series didn't last. Ben Cross makes an excellent Barnabas, sympathetic and terrifying by turns. And hints were dropped about future appearances by Roger's wife Laura, and other characters. I would love to have seen how characters like Adam, Quentin, and Nicholas Blair would have been re-interpreted.
This set is well-packaged, and the picture quality is excellent. It would make a great Christmas gift for the DS fan.
Now if they'll only do a special edition with that additional footage...
