Book Description

Feb 3 2009
In the tradition of Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, Nick Heil recounts the harrowing story of the deadly and controversial 2006 climbing season on Everest.

In early May 2006, a young British climber named David Sharp lay dying near the top of Mount Everest while forty other climbers walked past him on their way to the summit. A week later, Lincoln Hall, a seasoned Australian climber, was left for dead near the same spot. Hall’s death was reported around the world, but the next day he was found alive after spending the night on the upper mountain with no food and no shelter.

If David Sharp’s death was shocking, it was not singular: despite unusually good weather, ten others died attempting to reach the summit that year. In this meticulous inquiry into what went wrong, Nick Heil tells the full story of the deadliest year on Everest since the infamous season of 1996. He introduces Russell Brice, the outfitter who has done more than anyone to provide access to the summit via the mountain’s north side–and who some believe was partially responsible for Sharp’s death. As more climbers attempt the summit each year, Heil shows how increasingly risky expeditions and unscrupulous outfitters threaten to turn Everest into a deadly circus.

Written by an experienced climber and outdoor writer, Dark Summit is both a riveting account of a notorious climbing season and a troubling investigation into whether the pursuit of the ultimate mountaineering prize has spiralled out of control.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed it! May 10 2013
Format:Paperback
Nick Heil is obviously not just a writer of a book on climbing but also an experienced climber, and his knowledge of climbing greatly enhances this book. But Heil is also not just an experienced climber but also an excellent writer who has a very engaging writing style. I found this book thoroughly enjoyable, partly because of how thoroughly he unpacked this tale, but also because of his creative and insightful writing style. I had read a few books about Everest's south side but knew very little about the north side, and this book made it clear that the north side is no less of an adventure than all we've heard about the Lhotse Face, the South Col and the South Summit since the hugely popular "Into Thin Air" was written. If you're the type of person who can't get enough detail about Everest, and is intrigued by the many mysteries that a place so far away holds for most of us, then this book is for you. On top of that Heil tells a story of a singular year containing multiple tragedies in a way that feels fair and balanced, leaving the reader to come to his or her own conclusions about how some of the deaths could have been averted.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard to get through Feb 6 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this book since I have been fascinated with Everest since Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air". The prologue looked really interesting but about two chapters in, my attention started to wane. I do find the history of Everest interesting but don't feel that this book keeps the excitement going. If you don't mind a somewhat slow, detailed, technical read, this is for you. But for me, I ended up skimming it.

I enjoyed the reading, but very slow moving. Definitely not one of those"can't put down books". Again, was a good read, but I wouldn't put it at the top of my list for recommendations.
