Product Description

“You are invited to the death of Nayan Gupta….”When a mysterious card arrives in the mail, RussellQuant has a date with murder. From the glitzy high rises of Dubai and frankincense fields of Oman, to the scorching sand dunes of SaudiArabia, gay Saskatoon PI Russell Quant takes a magiccarpet ride that skids to a deadly halt on the icy surfaceof a frozen pond in the middle of theSaskatchewan prairie. This is Russell Quant’s wildest case ever: carpetexpert Nayan Gupta has been found murdered inDubai’s old souk and Russell must sift through layersof deception and danger to get to the truth. It’s a perilousvoyage that pits Quant’s wits against a snootymuseum curator, a bevy of shifty carpet merchants, and the denizens of an underground club for “fabulousmen.” As Russell’s spicy foreign adventure heats up, helearns a valuable lesson about love, life and the importanceof seizing the moment…before it’s gone. On theverge of making the biggest personal decision of hislife, Russell discovers that endings sometimes comebefore beginnings.

The well constructed mystery. The endearing, charming, likable, believable characters. The humour. The wit. The warm writing style, that captures your interest immediately, and holds your undivided attention to the last page.
This is a zenith in the Mystery Genre, and a first (as far as I've found) in the gay Mystery Genre. Not a political diatribe - just a wonderful entertaining mystery!
Every adventure of Russel Quant has been a wonderful adventure and mystery. This one is no exception. Plus I learned a great deal about life in the Middle East! A travelogue to boot!
I can't say enough about the Russel Quant series - all of them - including Sheesha! This one kept me on the edge of my seat to the very end! Can a book do that? Yes, it can. Yes they do!
Bidulka's Quant Mysteries all do. I haven't enjoyed reading this much in a long time, and I can't wait for the next in the series to come out.
Do yourself a favour. Have fun. Laugh out loud. Be enthralled with a good mystery, with characters you'll come to love. Go with the Russel Quant Mysteries. You'll love them as much as I do!

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love Russell Quant, May 24 2010
By
This review is from: Date with a Sheesha (Paperback)
There! It's out there. I love Russell Quant. I may not be quite his type. But a girl can dream, right? This feeling of love is probably more of a familial, protective kind of love than a I wanna have your children kind of love (although I'd consider it). It hit me about half way through Date With a Sheesha. Russell is juggling a weighty case, a journey more exotic and dangerous than any before, and challenges in his personal life that could change everything. He does it with such grace and kindness and sharp wit, all while worrying about what's happening back home. I just wanted to give him a big hug and tell him it'll all be okay.

Thank goodness he has such a good sense of humour about everything, otherwise this could have been a very dark and gloomy book. As it is, there is soul searching aplenty in this book, and not just by Russell. At the same time, he is smoking sheesha in Emirate cafes, visiting underground (way underground) dance clubs, and taking camel rides through killing sandstorms. All in a day's work for this prairie private eye. What's not to love?

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply a Joy from start to finish, May 24 2010
This review is from: Date with a Sheesha (Paperback)
In Date With a Sheesha, we are taken to a part of the world not many of us will ever experience - the Middle East. Anthony Bidulka does it up Russell Quant style. I checked the author's website, and like the other books in the series, he actually did visit the Middle East (see the back cover photo too) and all the places mentioned in the book. Although the book rings true without this knowledge, somehow it makes me quiver a bit, thrilled with the authenticity of it all.
As usual, the real joy of this book is not just the colourful locales, but rather the situations Russell finds himself him, and the people he deals with. This time there are shady carpet dealers, bedouins and sheikhs, and potentially untrustworthy members of the worlds of art and academia. Not to mention Russell's mother Kay, his friends Errall and Anthony, and his new life with the loveable Ethan Ash.
This is an Arabian tale like no other. Expect the unexpected. With plenty of laughs and tears and sharp intakes of breath along the way. Have a wonderful date with Russell Quant.
