Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Setting her story in a ravaged America circa 2714, Bush conjures an involving, yet ultimately unsatisfying tale of tragic love, misplaced loyalty and lust for power. In this world, Lego blocks, discovered amidst rubble, inspire awe. Abelard Ridenau, charismatic king of Meriga (hint, hint) seeks to bring glory back to his country, waging a constant battle against Harleyriders, Mutens and enemies disguised as friends. At his side is Nydia Farhallen, a beautiful woman who, unbeknownst to most, holds the ability to use the fearsome and forbidden Magic that destroyed much of the world. Whether?and how?Nydia uses her talents will decide the course of the future. Daughter of Prophecy is primarily Nydia's story, and as such, it suffers from her bad character and her loyalty to an unsavory cause. Bush has also failed to delineate the inhabitants of her post-apocalyptic world; the dreaded Harleyriders (who do not ride Harleys), for example, never emerge from the background. And while Bush at times displays a vivid imagination, it is underutilized: too many pages pass without anything wondrous, and the most promising twists come only with the final chapters. Much hangs in the balance still at the book's conclusion. Presented as a stand-alone fantasy, Daughter of Prophecy is sufficiently intriguing to raise interest in subsequent works.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique, Oct 15 2007
By
This review is from: Daughter of Prophecy (Mass Market Paperback)
I too read this book almost 10 years ago and am presently attempting to remember details. What I do remember is that I thoroughly enjoyed the read. There were very descriptive scenes and maybe scenes that were not so descriptive, but the entire book held my interest. At least by my recollection. The main characters were beautifully portrayed. Above all, I felt that her story was unique to other post apocalyptic, or even fantasy grain novels, that I have read. I was prompted to read some of her further novels for refreshing ideas and her character development of the anti-hero.

2.0 out of 5 stars Memorably disappointing, April 7 2004

I bought this book when it first came out, and the disappointment of it has stayed with me to this day. Unfortunately, it's been so long ago that I don't remember the details anymore. I remember being intrigued by the world she created, but the characters didn't appeal to me and the ending was nonsense without the sequel(s).

On the plus side, I still recall the author's name and reading this book nearly ten years after the fact. On the negative side, that memory has kept me from picking up any of her other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice, enjoyable read., April 30 2005

I picked this book up expecting something a bit more fluffy and light. I'm so glad I was wrong. It is not a 'happy' novel, and doesn't try to portrey it's characters as perfect, (which they are very definitely not).
The author's vision of a post-apocolyptic America is fascinating, mixing science fiction and fantasy without being awkward. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next two books in the series.

This book had a wonderfull plot line, and unique ideas, however, there wasfar to much....love making (shall we say) scenes, and it greatly took away from the plot.

3.0 out of 5 stars this was an unexpected enjoyable book, July 31 1998

this is the first of Bush's "Pride and Pattern" trilogy, and the best book in the trilogy at that. the book follows the changing relationships between three people, King Abelard, Nydia the witch, and Phineas the captain of the Guard. After saving Nydia from execution Abelard decides to use her against people who stand in his way for gaining complete control over his realm. The society created bu Bush; a scarry and twisted furture america, is intricate and full of mystery, however Bush concentrated on the relationship between Nydia and Abelard more than she should hafe, i think, and this detracted from the actual plot. the ending is completely unexpected and leaves ample room for the two books that followed it.
