Good, but not as amazing as other BBC nature shows,

David Attenborough's Wildlife Specials is a solid set of six episodes, including crocodiles, eagle,s polar bears, leopards, wolves, and humpback whales. These are generally very good shows, but they don't quite live up to some of the other BBC nature shows for a few reasons. First, some of the material appears to be borrowed from earlier shows, like "The Life Of...". Having watched all of those, this collection seemed a little repetitive in places. And unlike Life, which was also sometimes repetitive, this is not in HD, so the picture quality is so-so, especially on larger screens. Lastly, the shows themselves vary considerably. I quite enjoyed the shows that focused on a single species, like the leopard, humpback whale, and wolf episodes (polar bear was nothing really new). The eagle and crocodile episodes were really fun to watch, but they covered so many different species that you really didn't get an detailed look at any one species.So I'd give this movie five stars if you haven't watched a lot of Attenborough BBC and are watching this on a small-medium sized TV. Otherwise, it's a good collection, but not quite up to the industry-leading standard of other Attenborough BBC shows. The bonus contents, amazing events and amazing places, are interesting, but weren't must-buy features on their own. So I'm happy to give this DVD a solid four stars.

Wow these specials are amazing, my favorite is the crocodile one, how do they get these shots???The Leopard , the polar bear, the wolf ones are amazing too. The Humpback Whale one was a bit of a letdown, but hey these are basically fish, I know they aren't but to me they aren't that interesting. Overall a great box set, with 2 extra specials ...Most amazing animal events which has a very interesting garter snake entry, and landmarks which is basically scenery, great shots of death valley (but why the superimpose cowboys???). Hope they put out more dvd sets with the remaining BBC specials, which they will in time. And a not of interest, I saw it on DVD and the quality is like that of Blu - Ray.

This two disc collection is a great value, each disc contains four shows narrated by David Attenborough, so it is not overbearing, and it offers beautiful wildlife pictures unhindered by presenters in the foreground.DISC ONE contains four 45 min shows : CROCODILE, EAGLE, LEOPARD and POLAR BEAR. DISC TWO contains two 45 min shows HUMPBACK WHALE, WOLF, as well as two bonus programs, an hour show that collects some of nature's GREATEST WILDLIFE SHOWS and a 40 min show on NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD. The main eight shows have all been on PBS and are professionally done, which makes this two disc set more then worth the $20 price tag. The two bonus shows present many different segments about the animal world. I found the Greatest Wildlife Show to be the most entertaining, a one hour show presenting 12 short segments about various animals doing their most impressive natural activities. I will purchase any DVD produced or narrated by David Attenborough. You just can't lose. This man could make mowing a lawn interesting. He involves the viewer so deeply in his documentaries that you crave more. I can't wait til The Private Lives of Plants becomes available on Region 1 [U.S. & Canada] DVD. I contacted the BBC and begged them to consider transferring it to Region 1 DVD. I saw a clip and it looks incredible. This (Wildlife Specials) set is no exception. It is absolutely fascinating as are all of Sir David's work. He is flawless in his work.

David Attenborough is able to capture your attention and entertain you while teaching you about the natural world. He seems to love everything from the smallest plant to the largest mammal - and he is able to convey this love to his audience. With more people like Sir David, I am sure our world would be a better place and we wouldn't be facing the dangers of global warming.These wildlife specials are very entertaining and informative. |
