About the Author

With more than a million books in print, David D. Busch is the world's #1 selling digital camera guide author, and the originator of popular digital photography series like David Busch's Pro Secrets and David Busch's Quick Snap Guides. He has written more than a dozen hugely successful guidebooks for Canon and Canon digital SLR models, as well as many popular books devoted to dSLRs, including Mastering Digital SLR Photography, Second Edition, and Digital SLR Pro Secrets. As a roving photojournalist for more than twenty years, he illustrated his books, magazine articles, and newspaper reports with award-winning images. He's operated his own commercial studio, suffocated in formal dress while shooting weddings-for-hire, and shot sports for a daily newspaper and upstate New York college. His photos and articles have appeared in Popular Photography & Imaging, The Rangefinder, The Professional Photographer, and hundreds of other publications. He has also reviewed dozens of digital cameras for CNet and Computer Shopper, and his advice has been featured in National Public Radio's "All Tech Considered." When About.com named its top five books on Beginning Digital Photography, debuting at the #1 and #2 slots were Busch's Digital Photography All-In-One Desk Reference for Dummies and Mastering Digital Photography. During the past year, he's had as many as five of his books listed in the Top 20 of Amazon.com's Digital Photography Bestseller list--simultaneously! Busch's 120-plus other books published since 1983 include bestsellers like David Busch's Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Lenses. Visit his website at http://www.dslrguides.com.

Okay, can I just say how wonderful it is that there is a published guide just for the Canon Rebel XS / 1000D? If you're looking, you'll soon find out there are several. I settled on this one because every page is in colour and it has copious amounts of examples, diagrams and photographs. Other guide books I found were thin, black/white or Dummies. (While I do appreciate the Dummies brand, after reading one too many I found myself frustrated by being beat over the head with the same simplified information again and again.) David Busch is also a great photographer and an excellent author.

The book is very thorough and organized, yet concise enough that you don't mind reading every page. Busch explains why you care about each setting and how it will affect your photos (unlike the little manual that comes with the camera). And I know I mentioned this already, but there are actual photographs used for examples! Very helpful! :)

Overall, a really great manual with every page written specifically for the Rebel XS! If you want to get to know your camera - really know it - this is the guide you need.

Great information for the Canon XS Rebel Sept. 20 2009
By L. Schwager - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
After trying to read the manual that came with my new Canon Rebel XS camera - I saw the book written by David Busch on the Digital XS Rebel. I can honestly say that after going through this book - with my new camera in hand - I totally understand 95% of the camera's functions. The other 5% was dealing with
electronic flash and a few items that I probably will never use on my camera - that being said - I still have that information available to me in his book if I ever choose to deal with those items. The road map - which he provides is excellent in the way that every button on the camera is explained to it fullest without confusing you as to their actions - as most buttons have two to three or more functions. My only regret is the fact that the book is not small enough to put in my camera bag for use when I am out there taking photographs. Thanks David for such a detailed and specific book written just for the Canon Rebel XS camera.

Easy Read - Helpfull Hints March 6 2010
By G. Brumley - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I recently bought my first Digital SLR, which was quite abit different then the point and shoot cameras I have had. The camera was abit intimidating with all of it's features. My goodness I felt I was flying an F16 when looking through the viewfinder and seeing all the informtion in it, but not understanding what it was telling me. This book helped with all of my questions. There is alot of information that I still don't quite understand, but I now understand enough to feel comfortable with the camera when photographing. I have had the book about 90 days, and have not finished it yet. This is not because it is boring but rather the book answered so many of my questions within the first few chapters that I feel comfortable with it. I would recommend this if you are an ameture - like me - and have never owned a Canon digital SLR camera. A++.

Well Written May 11 2009

I couldn't decide between this one and the one for Dummies, so I got both. The explanations are clearer and it's easier on the eyes. Both are very good. The best one, though, isThe Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/1000D Companion. That one just clicked for me, and if you are only looking for one, that would be my choice for the most useful.

Excellent book. Feb. 4 2010
By BV of Phoenix - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Prior to purchasing this book and camera I had been using a simple point and shoot and understood virtually nothing beyond using a camera on auto settings. From a beginners standpoint this was a great book for both learning how to operate an SLR camera and understand fundamental basics of photography. It details how to get the most out of the camera for different situations, working with lenses, flash, accessories, basics on photo editing software etc. The camera itself is an excellent entry level SLR, this book really goes the distance on how to maximize it to its full potential without being too confusing. I'm about to upgrade to a canon 7d, figured I'd recommend this book for anyone looking to learn this camera.

Owners of the digital Canon EOS Rebel will appreciate an in-depth survey of one of the most advanced entry-level cameras Canon has ever made. From choosing lenses and electronic flash options to selecting shutter speeds, using Live View, and troubleshooting tips, this is the owner's manual that should have been in the box, and is a top pick for any Canon owner.
