Usher's fourth solo record, If God Had Curves is as simple and un-slick as anything he has ever done; it isn't underproduced, just raw and honest. Usher has an obvious fondness for the simple-structured love song and of bare-bones human stories. The discs first track "Long Goodbye" is fully indicative of the influences of other inspirations on his own craft. The song includes a gorgeous, warm guitar solo from Canadian songwriting legend Bruce Cockburn, playing over a loop of a sample from punk rock/new wave troupe Le Tigre. The result is old-wood warm and beautiful. Track two starts with a sound clip of respected feminist Gloria Steinem; so begins the disc's first single "Love Will Save The Day" a joyful, lyrically challenging number disguised as a pop song. Bonus points to the singer for the song "Hey Kids", a whimsical, sardonic musical march highlighted by Tegan Quin, of Tegan & Sarah fame. As is the case with other David Usher records, the one thing missing is his preference for writing pretty-sounding prose and societal commentary over really pulling out personal stories from the rawest part of his soulbut theres always hoping. --Denise Sheppard

Simply mesmerizing,

This review is from: David Usher:If God Had Curves (Audio CD)
David Usher is an amazing artist from song writing, singing (what a set of vocals) to his live performance (WOW). I have yet to find another band/ singer who has the talent, the voice that makes you melt, or the creativity to explore life, and its meaning. "If God had Curves" Is an amazing CD there is no comparison to his other CD's because they are all amazing in their own unique way. This is what I really like about David's music, in that, it is never boring and he always adds and tries something new and different to his music. This includes experimenting with variety of instruments including his voice. On top of that, the lyrics that he writes are deep and meaningful and they make you think, Therefore leaving you craving for more. JIf you get a chance, you NEED to see him live. His CD is amazing but his performance is WOW...

I simply love this CD. I haven't been able to turn it off since I bought it. For me it doesn't quite top his first album, Little Songs, but it comes in a close second. It has a nice mix of moody, introspective ballads and catchy, up-beat tunes. One of my favourite songs on this new album is the whimsical "Hey Kids". It's so outside of the realm of what David normally does, but he pulls it off wonderfully. Basically, this album won't leave you disappointed!

Another unique cd from david,

This review is from: David Usher:If God Had Curves (Audio CD)
I just picked up this cd on my lunch hour and had to listen to it on the computer at work. Maybe not the ideal conditions but I got a good feel for it. Firstly It's not as good as "Little Songs" which was brilliant, but any David usher fan will enjoy it. There are a couple of gems here "everything is all right by me" , "souring" "love will save the day" "going home" and there are a few other easy to take songs. The only true stinker is "Hey Kids"... not sure what that is doing on this cd. The Cd is short, coming in at under 40 minutes, which is neither a good or bad thing considering "Little Songs" was around the same length. I would have to say that lyrically it's not David's best and I wouldn't mind a little more "moist" flavour, but I'm still happy with this cd as I have been with all David's cds. I'm not sure this will bring too many new fans into Davids corner but should keep those he has satisfied. Maybe getting this cd onto my stereo at home will make me re-think the rating, maybe up to 4 and half stars but for now it's a 4 star rating.
