Ten-year-old David Green thinks his new pet is a nice, normal goldfish--until the bossy, outspoken little Whirly Fish pops out of the fish bowl and introduces himself! He tells David that a Whirly Fish comes along every three million years. He can speak on a zither wave, whirl through the air like a golden pinwheel and weigh problems on his flashing orange scales. The Whirly Fish wants to be where the action is, so he schemes and whines to tag along with David--to school, to a fancy dinner party with the neighbors, and to the park pond during David's Little League game. But every time David gives in, the Whirly Fish's hilarious antics and wild escapades cause nothing but trouble. When the Whirly Fish becomes the father of 6,892 baby goldfish, he must figure a way to get them to the park pond before David can sell them to Mr. Tidbinkle for his pet shop aquarium.

As the adventure begins with David and his fish, David gets into trouble at school because of his new pet. Dinner at Mrs. Podertuck's house turns out to be a mess because of the Whirly Fish and Timothy, a hungry cat. There's a girl David's age in parts of the story and he doesn't care much for girls! At a pond, the Whirly fish meets a girl fish, Angelica, and other creatures. As the story progresses, David winds-up getting his hands full because of his new pet! There are fish, snails, frogs, a cat, rabbits, a scorpion, a pelican, hummingbirds, water bugs, and others in the story.
What a fun book! It's well written from a 10-year-old's point of view. Young readers would probably find "David and the Whirly Fish" fun and easy to read. I highly recommend it! Two thumbs up! Great book Geraldine!
