Disappointing Photo Journal of El Bulli,
By
This review is from: A Day At Elbulli (Hardcover)
This is a very interesting book of behind-the-scenes workings of the top restaurant on the planet. Although I really enjoy it (fellow molecular gastronomy fans will love it) I find it is not informative enough for my taste. I was hoping for more explanations and descriptions of things rather than basically a huge compendium of photographs with little written text. I guess I should have clued in with the title!! In between the pages are odd little pages with further bits of information. This book is cheaply and awkwardly arranged. Get "Alinea" instead if you are into molecular gastronomy. Even better, Heston Blumenthal's "Fat Duck". I enjoy it about 100 times more!It is a hefty and intriguing book but not one you would turn to time and time again as a reference guide. I definitely would not recommend it for a beginner cook - they might be turned off but I would recommend it to those with scientific minds and who enjoy experimentation like myself.

While I may never know if the softcover copy I recently bought is identical to this hardcover I certainly will say that the book is worth it. Was waiting nine months for it to come back into print and then they released the new softcover version. If you have any interest into the creative process behind the man who created on of the best and most controversial restaurants in the world, this is the place to start.A Day at elBulli

This is a doorstop !,
By Thelonius Cook (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Day At Elbulli (Hardcover)
If you order this, you are a complete sucker !!! Page after page after page of sequenced shots of meal prep at the restaurant "for those not lucky enough to secure a reservation". Of great particular interest are the 8 pages (count them EIGHT PAGES) devoted to checking the generator and the recycling system. Another great highlight was the several pages devoted to photos of guests arriving and the view you would have from the car as you drive to the restaurant - if you were actually lucky enough to go there. - Wo ! Very, VERY, informative AND exciting to view. Essentially 528 pages of banality. The small inserts are the whole book. Very decent - they should have bound those and sold them in a slimmer format. This is a money grab - any respectable publisher should be embarrassed to publish such a profligate, wasteful and useless tome.
