Product Description

Chilly, forced, and overdone, this mixed bag of modern classics, tarted-up traditional carols, and trio of tunes penned by Beyonce Knowles doesn't conjure a single warm and fuzzy image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Rather, it's just another forum to showcase the band's Gucci bag of vocal gymnastics and crass materialism. The Texas trio takes seasonal classics like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," "Silent Night," and "Little Drummer Boy" and embellishes them with their own trills and off-kilter harmonies, obscuring the songs' simple beauty. "On the eighth day of Christmas, my baby gave to me a pair of Chloe shades and a diamond belly ring," brags Knowles in the title song, a takeoff on the "12 Days of Christmas," without ever explaining why they lopped off four days. The band is shamelessly self-indulgent throughout the dozen songs found here, taking untold liberties, like renaming "Carol of the Bells" "Opera Bells" and recasting "Silver Bells" as "Platinum Bells" to reflect their multiplatinum status. But the low point of the record is when Destiny's Child hawk their Hasbro-manufactured dolls in the intro of "Platinum Bells": "Ladies, remember long ago we asked Santa to give us Christmas dolls? This year the dolls are you and me under the tree." Humbug. --Jaan Uhelszki

4.0 out of 5 stars DC makes a full range Christmas album Jan. 3 2014
By Kassia
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a good, pop, Christmas Album. Best song is the 12 days of Christmas. If you're a Destiny's Child fan, or even a Beyoncé fan, you'll enjoy the album. I'd recommend Justin Bieber 's Christmas album too, and of course, Miriah Carey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Destiny's Child first, Christmas second Dec 8 2012

What I mean by my title, is that this album was clearly meant to sound like Destiny's Child first. And the songs just happened to be Christmas themed. They don't necessarily reflect the "Christmas" tradition or spirit that you'd be used to from most Christmas albums.

So you're either going to like that, or you'll not like it. Personally, I'm loving the album. I love DC, so it's interesting to just hear them singing like they usually do with production like they'd normally have... but for Christmas songs. It means this album doesn't really feel out of place in their discography. Which is actually quite nice.

I'd suggest listening to the album before you buy it, so you can get an idea of what it's like. Because it will definitely depend on your tastes whether or not you enjoy this direction of a Christmas album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Horrible (3 1/2 stars) Dec 18 2008
Format:Audio CD
At first I didn't really like this CD. I only bought it because it was on sale for $6, but the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me a bit.

- Some of the arrangements do not compliment the holiday season and they sound bland ("Platinum Bells", "White Christmas").
- Some of the lyrics are ridiculous ("But this year the dolls are you and me", "It's Christmas time with the Churren")

- These girls can sing and their harmonizing is beautiful. ("Opera of the Bells", title track),
- Each of the girls have solo songs on this CD, which is nice to see because it showcases their individuality. ("Silent night", "Do You Hear What I Hear", "O Holy Night")
- Some of the tracks are really fun ("Winter Paradise" - which creatively samples George Michael's "Father Figure" - and "A DC Christmas Medley".)

Overall, this CD is actually a nice listen during the holiday season. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great CD June 13 2004
By Jamaal
Format:Audio CD
I have read all the diffrent comments that people have written and i feel you have not given the cd credit deserverd....... Although maby the cd was put together in a short period of time, I feel that the vocals on this cd are way better than that of Destinys Child first album No, No, No and that of Survivor.... dont get me wrong, Survivor was a great album but u still didnt get to hear the vocals of Michelle and Kelly enough. In 8Days Of Christmas they each have an individual solo song and each of them just as good as the other. Yes I do agree that Beyonce's voice is overused and would like to hear a diffrence in the next Destinys Cild album... And there are more than just 2 good song on the album. My few Fav's are, 8 Days of Christmas, Winter Paradise, A DC Med;ey, Little Drummer Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear, Spread a Little Love on Christmas Day (which is my ultimate fav) and This Christmas...... That is almost the whole album. I think the reviews that are shown on this are from buyers who just bought the Cd and wrote it a week or 2 after buying it and listening to it 1 time. I admit after I heard the Cd for the first time I regreted I bought it but after listening to it over and over again you learn how to appreciate the song just like any other cd. I congradulate DC3 on this cd and wish them the best of luck...... I dont get or understand how people wrote what they did but thats your choice..... I say the CD was GREAT and I advise everyone to go out and buy it........... I feel everyone just need to get out of this old school thing..... we are in the year 2004 not in the year 1960. Things are gonna change and i find it great that DC broke out of the original instead of the same old classic christmas songs. It gets boring. If you want classic go and buy "Now Thats What I Call Christmas" Dont complain because they are trying to stay witht the times they are in.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing Dec 27 2003
Format:Audio CD
There are only two songs on this entire CD that I recommned: "8 Days of Christmas" and "Opera of the Bells." 8 Days has a great dance beat, it just makes me wanna get up and dance! Opera shows off Destiny's Child's amazing vocal skills and harmony. The other songs do too, but their just not very good. The other songs I feel as if they're trying too hard to sound good. They should just sing naturally and it would be awesome. Don't buy this, it's only worth the two tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good to only play around Christmas time!! Dec 19 2003
Format:Audio CD
OK, so I'm a huge fanatic of DC, but I try to be honest with my reviews ... AND THIS IS TRULY AN AWESOME CHRISTMAS ALBUM!!! if you're not a fan of R&B or DC, I'm not trying to force you to go buy this (why are you even reading this?), but if you are, what are you waiting for? Since i'm really bored and have a lot of time on my hands, I'll give you a quick summarey of each song:
8 Days of Christmas is an awesome, funky twist on 12 Days Of Christmas. love it!
Winter paradise is cool because every member has a verse to themselves. Awesome!!
A DC Christmas Medley is a bouncy number with about a zillion different Cristmas carols mixed cleverly together and each member has a verse.
Silent Night really shows off Beyonce's vocal range. You go, girl!
Little Drummer Boy is really cool. It features Beyonce's sister Solange.
Do You hear What I Hear is my favorite! Kelly has a beautiful voice, and the harp and guitar are soooo pretty underneath it!
White Christmas is rather short but has great harmonies!
Platinum Bells is another short one but it's another clever twist on Silver Bells.
oh Holy Night showcases Michelle's rich and soulful voice.
Spread A Little love on Christmas Day is a good dance number with positive lyrics!
This Christmas is an awesome remake!
Opera Of The Bells is an excellent opportunity to show off DC's precise harmony! Jaw-droppingly perfect!
Proud Family is catchy and fun.
Emotion with Strings was a really pleasant surprise. Even my dad liked it, and he was stuck on the BG's version!
OK, this is getting very long, so in closing, I was once again wowed by these ladies! Holla!
