Book Description

Oct. 17 2007 Radiohead
Stanley Donwood and the enigmatic Dr Tchock are the elusive duo responsible for Radiohead’s artwork. Containing paintings they have produced in the last decade, this book alsocontains a cornucopia of never-before-seen artwork. Featuring the apocalyptic scenes of the OK Computer album, the startling, sinister shadow of memory cast onto the present in the Kid A paintings, and theoverwhelming information overload of Hail to the Thief’s landscapes of conflict, Dead Children Playing presents some of the most iconic artwork of our time.

Product Description

"The publisher of this book wishes me to vouch for the writer of this book who is a friend of mine in order to utilise whatever celebrity kudos the writer of this quote, i.e., me, has left in order to advance the sales of this book. This has been duly done now in the form of this quote. I am sure the book is very good though I cannot remember what it is called or whether I have read it. I've read lots of his stuff and it's always good and I am in no way biased." - Thom Yorke, lead singer of Radiohead"

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead Children Playing Nov. 25 2009
This is an extension of Donwood's show at Barcelona's Iquapop Gallery ([...]). These images will be familiar to all Radiohead fans, I am one, with artwork for the band stretching back over a decade. This is all haunting and conjures up the sounds of Radiohead as one looks through the pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars For Radiohead Fans Dec 12 2007

I don't imagine that you're looking at this book if you're not already a big Radiohead fan, so you're lucky that this book's target market is definitely you. There is a lot of good artwork, sketches, and lyric pages from Stanley Donwood and Dr. Tchock (Thom Yorke) from the OK Computer era through to the recent artwork for Yorke's The Eraser solo album. One of the things that I found most interesting was that the Hail to the Thief word collage/maps were identified as the cities on which they're based. Of course, NYC was easy, but you probably had to be a real geography whiz to know the rest.

Anyhow, for this price, it's a good book to flip through, although your friends might give you some funny looks when they see the title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw and Immediate Art Jan. 22 2011
By Grady Harp - Published on
For those unfamiliar with Radiohead, the following description of this art piece will be helpful: 'Dead Children Playing: A Picture Book' is a picture book by Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke (under the alias of "Dr. Tchock") featuring artwork that has been used on English alternative rock band Radiohead's albums between 1996 and 2003, and on Thom Yorke's album The Eraser. The book also contains works of art that have not previously been released, made between 1999 and 2005.' What is inside this bizarrely titled book is some truly fascinating art by Donwood and Yorke. The images carry secondary meanings that are at times rather frightening - 'Red Snow Boot prints.', 'Residential nemesis', 'Get out before Saturday', 'Trade Center', 'United states' - each are acrylic on canvas in an expressionist abstract style, rich in color and viscerally involving. The works in this well designed and exciting book were part of an exhibition in Barcelona in 2006. It is well they were preserved in book form as works like these often are disseminated among collectors and are not available for public appreciation.

There are some interesting commentaries, especially by Stanley Donwood, about the works - not the technique used but rather the sundry impressions that became art. This is art of the now and very well done. Grady Harp, January 11

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Radiohead fans Oct. 19 2008
By Sebastian Castro Zuñiga - Published on
If you are into Radiohead, this book is a must have in your collection.

You will find in the text an insight into the inspiration sources and creative methods of Stanley Donwood and Dr. Tchock. The quality of the print is good, and the hard cover gives it a nice durable feel.

This book has all the wonderful strangeness that a Radiohead fan can appreciate. The artwork is great and the text is interesting. Plus if you leave the book sitting out on your coffee table it makes for a great conversation starter.
