Book Description

Jun 5 2012 Lacey Flint Novels (Book 2)

When a rash of suicides tears through Cambridge University, DI Mark Joesbury recruits DC Lacey Flint to go undercover as a student to investigate. Although each student’s death appears to be a suicide, the psychological histories, social networks, and online activities of the students involved share remarkable similarities, and the London police are not convinced that the victims acted alone. They believe that someone might be preying on lonely and insecure students and either encouraging them to take their own lives or actually luring them to their deaths. As long as Lacey can play the role of a vulnerable young woman, she may be able to stop these deaths, but is it just a role for her? With her fragile past, is she drawing out the killers, or is she herself being drawn into a deadly game where she’s a perfect victim?

Dark and compelling, S. J. Bolton’s latest thriller—a follow-up to the acclaimed Now You See Me—is another work of brilliant psychological suspense that plumbs the most sinister depths.

Review

Dead Scared

“Outstanding. . .Bolton never eases up the tension; her tightly coiled plot and heroine on the edge work perfectly in tandem.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review, Pick of the Week)

“A number of superlatives could be used to describe Bolton’s new work, but a simple “wow!” will do. After reading the last sentence, I realized I had been holding my breath during the final page or two. Yes, the ending is that gripping. The story’s atmosphere is dark and spooky, the main characters are strong yet vulnerable and the plot is refreshingly unpredictable. This stunning psychological thriller is well worth your time. You’ll be hooked from page one.”
RT Book Reviews (4½ Stars, Top Pick)

“Readers will be caught up in the twists and turns that leave them hanging until the final paragraph.”
Library Journal (starred review)

“Credible characters, an evocative setting, and a chilling group of clever sadists make the latest from Bolton a satisfying and suspenseful read.”
Booklist

Now You See Me

“S. J. Bolton is changing the face of crime fiction—if you only read one crime novel this year, make it this.”
—Tess Gerritsen

Now You See Me is really special: multi-layered and sophisticated, but tough too.”
Lee Child

“Bolton provides excruciating tension and much else. Romantics can drool over Joesbury’s turquoise eyes; amateur psychologists can mull Lacey’s one-nighters; and Ripperologists can ponder theories of Jack’s real identity, one of which helps tie up the plot.”
Kirkus Reviews (starred review, One of the Best Mysteries of 2011)

“The twists keep coming, and the truth is not revealed until the final page in Bolton’s best novel yet.”
Library Journal (starred review)

“Nice atmosphere and good Ripper lore.”
Booklist

“Bolton's fourth thriller, a complex psychological puzzler, stands head and shoulders above other such efforts featuring a modern copycat Jack the Ripper. . .Bolton skillfully plays with the reader's expectations.”
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Excellent. . .Now You See Me is a cerebral thriller that avoids clichés. Each twist and turn is unpredictable as are the fully drawn characters' actions.”
—Oline H. Cogdill, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

4.0 out of 5 stars Dead Scared Jan 13 2013

Dead Scared is another fun read by S.J. Bolton. Bolton was born and brought up in England and has been writing novels for several years. The novels that I have read so far,all but one, feature a young detective constable, Lacey Flint. Lacey's past reads like a Dickens character. She is a bit of a hard nose. Her character, has seen hard times but she uses her street smarts to her advantage. (She is like Carol O'Connell's character Mallory.) Bolton's writing is solid, she develops her characters and her plot at an easy pace. Her books are easy to follow, you don't have any super good guys or evil master villains to deal with, and there are no zombies or end of days plots. Her characters are like normal people, just screwed up a bit more than normal. In 'Dead Scared',we find Lacey, under cover as a university student and another familiar character, psychiatrist Evi Oliver up against the bad guys. There is a bit of romance in this one, not much, but you can skip over those parts,if you like. I have found these good books to unwind with, books for rainy days and easy reading. I don't know how I managed to overlook this author but I am a fan now and looking forward to S.J.Bolton's new book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Mystery Writer Jun 12 2012
By L.M. Seippel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
D.C. Lacey Flint is called into a case involving an odd increase in suicides at Cambridge. She'll be undercover reporting to old flame Mark Joesbury and working with Evi Oliver, a psychiatrist and head of student counseling. Evi is the person who brought the suicides to the attention of the police. Evi thinks that there might be a website encouraging the students to take their own lives.

Lacey soon realizes there is something much worse going on. Her assignment is to fit in and report what she hears. Not to investigate. On her first night there, Lacey is targeted by a gang of bullying male students in masks. That is just the beginning. Soon she realizes someone is trying to break her. Lacey doesn't think that's possible. It's hard for her to understand how anyone could allow their free will to be taken away and be pushed into suicide.

Dead Scared is told by Lacey in first person, but scenes without her are told in third person. The title really describes this mystery/thriller. It is a scary, suspenseful read. S.J. Bolton ranks right up there with today's top mystery writers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and exciting! Jun 3 2012
By P. B. Sharp - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review
A young police woman, DC Lacey Flint, goes underground as a student in St. John's College, Cambridge, her assignment being to find the reasons and circumstances of higher than normal student suicides, nineteen in all and all girls. The methods of self destruction are bizarre- one girl, sitting in her car, has attached a rope to a tree, the other end around he neck and steps on the accelerator. Another girl sets herself on fire. Lacey has been sent on this assignment by Detective Inspector Mark Joesbury of Scotland Yard. Casey and Mark have had a troubled relationship which complicates the plot.

Author S.J. Bolton's style includes very short chapters of two or three pages each but you will feel yanked from one episode to another rather like a yo-yo. Often the chapter will end with a scary observation, and this writer is expert in keeping you turning the pages. The novel shifts from first person Lacey Flint telling of her adventures as under-cover cop to student counseling head Dr. Evi Oliver, who has serious problems of her own. It also shifts in time to episodes that happened nineteen years ago or five years ago or five minutes ago.

The plot of the novel is extremely complicated and far-fetched. However, you will find it absorbing enough to finish it. The personalities of the main characters, including Lacey, who is a "loose cannon" are well defined, less cardboardy than the characters in many crime novels. One of the nicest "characters" is the dog Sniffy. The descriptions of the haunted girls' terror as they hallucinate as though under the influence of psychedelic drugs are graphic and believable. They are plummeted into a desire to end their lives.

There are many twists and turns in the book as well as red herrings galore. Descriptions of the town of Cambridge as well as the colleges tucked inside the University are nicely limned by author Bolton- in fact the passages are lyrical enough for you to want to go to Cambridge and soak up the history, soak up the experience of being an undergraduate there.

"Dead Scared" is a fine mystery novel but I am giving it four stars rather than five because the plot and motivation of the perpetrators are not remotely realistic but that will not interfere with your enjoyment of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real Page Turner July 22 2012

I have read all of Bolton's books and have loved each one. I couldn't put the first 4 down and "Dead Scared" was no exception. It is full of creepy atmosphere and moves along at a fast pace. Bolton keeps the story going by keeping the chapters short and leaving you with cliff hanger chapter endings. I enjoyed reading about Lacey and Joesbury again. I really loved "Now You See Me" where we meet the two main characters for the first time and learn their back stories. Although you don't have to read "Now You See Me" before reading "Dead Scared" to enjoy this new book, I think that having the back story on Lacey helps you understand her motivations in "Dead Scared." I also enjoyed the reappearance of Evi and Harry from "Blood Harvest" (another book of Bolton's that I loved.) As always, Bolton gives the reader tiny bits of information at a time to piece together and draw conclusions and gives us some twists and turns along the way. I love Bolton's writing style! The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that the plot is a bit implausible and the ending is quite abrupt. The ending needed to wrap things up a little neater for me...what happened to poor Nick...were the criminals apprehended and brought to justice...what was the motivation (besides money) for so many people to get involved in such a sick scheme...and how did they all get involved with the main psychopath to begin with??? The ending seemed rushed and needed more explanation and tying up of loose ends. As others have said, an epilogue would have been nice. But even with those faults this is a great read with lots of thrills and chills that I could not put down! I want to go back and reread "Now You See Me" and refresh Lacey Flint's past in my mind. She is a complex and interesting character.
