Book Description

April 1 2006 Dead Sea Scrolls Electronic Reference Library CD-ROM
New and comprehensive electronic reference work on The Dead Sea Scrolls. Prepared by the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, under the editorship of Emanuel Tov. The Dead Sea Scrolls (DSS) probably represent the most significant manuscript discovery in recent history. These ancient texts have revolutionized the field of biblical and Judaic studies, and they have become an indispensable source for scholars and students alike. Although most of the texts have been published in some form or other, scholars have now only begun to grasp the true meaning and relevance of the scrolls for our understanding of ancient Judaism, the transmission of the biblical texts, and the origins of Christianity. This third volume of the DSS CD-ROM gives a more complete coverage of all of the published DSS materials, including scrolls identified in 2004 and 2005. Anyone using the CD-ROM will be able to access texts, images, and reference materials quickly and efficiently. The combination of a powerful text search engine and sophisticated image-manipulating software will enable scholars and students unparalleled research possibilities.

A major new feature is the addition of morphological analysis to all of the texts. This data gives glosses and part of speech analysis for each word in the database.

The database is powered by version 7 of WordCruncher®. This version is fully Unicode compatible, meaning that you can cut and paste from the database into Microsoft Word etc. The software makes full accommodation of the features of the Hebrew and Aramaic languages, by allowing users to search for words according to their root forms in these languages.

The database has an improved image set. Many images have been replaced with higher resolution copies, additional images have been included, and each fragment or scroll image is individually labelled.

With special thanks to West Semitic Research, who gave permission for the reproduction on the cover: "Photograph by Bruce and Kenneth Zuckerman, West Semitic Research. Courtesy Department of Antiquities, Jordan."

(This review will be updated in the future as I learn the ins-and-outs of the program.) DSS will be used throughout for Dead Sea Scroll(s).

The Dead Sea Scrolls Electronic Library is your next level of discovery. This program was developed by scholars to fully study the NON-Biblical scrolls. I stress "non-Biblical scrolls" because the biblical scrolls will likely be added in the forthcoming editions to this electronic project. This program does contain the same searchable features for the Leningrad Codex B19^A (The most popular masoretic Hebrew text of the Tanach/Old Testament). In other words the Biblical text that the program uses for comparison is not the DSS.

Features: You can search for any Semitic root(Hebrew/Aramaic) as well as grammatical structures, and complete phrases. You can parallel a reading of the DSS with its translation. You can maintain window tabs for quick selection between actual photographs of the DSS, the text in standard Hebrew font, the translation, a Hebrew Bible, and your notes (plus various other tools). The indistinguishable letters are marked with a graded scale based on confidence of choice. The grammatical catergories are also relative to the scholar(s) opinion because vowels points were absent in the original DSS.

I just started using the program. If you are not comfortable navigating computers it may be a challenge to use at the start. The user interface is a little bit primitive compared to modern Windows programs.

All of this is contained on one CD. You can install the program to run with the CD (14MB? disk space) or run without the CD (600+MB disk space).

If you have any questions, post them in the COMMENTS to this review and I will attempt to answer them.
