Let us begin with two words: "Nazi zombies." Let us add two more: "Hitler's gold." Yes, it's true. These are the elements of Dead Snow, a Norwegian horror picture that unleashes an undead blitzkrieg across an otherwise inviting winter landscape. The five vacationing med students who have blundered into this backcountry in search of fun have no idea that their actions will draw the attention of the aforesaid zombies of the Third Reich (what these reanimated corpses are doing in the mountains of Norway will be explained in good time). It would be nice to report that Dead Snow lives up to the outrageousness of its concept, but far too much of this thing is taken up with standard-issue slasher tropes: self-conscious dialogue about the plot's resemblance to an Evil Dead scenario, gross-out moments for their own sake (a sequence in an outhouse is especially regrettable), and decidedly uneven acting. The movie earns a few points for a grabby nighttime opening sequence and its unhealthy devotion to the art of entrails stretching (which, when it comes to people hanging off snowy cliffs, can have practical applications you probably never even thought about). The enthusiastic mayhem can't be denied, so if a sheer body count is your yardstick, Dead Snow comes across. But given the proximity of Nazi gold and the possibilities suggested by Hitler's minions returning from their snowy graves, this movie disappoints. --Robert Horton

5.0 out of 5 stars Comedic Horror, Nov 28 2009

This review is from: Dead Snow [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
If you like grisly humour, the kind you'd find in movies like "Dead Alive," "The Evil Dead," and "Inglorious Basterds," you'll like "Dead Snow." This is a foreign film in which 6 college students plan a holiday of snowball fights and canoodling in a mountain cabin, only to be attacked by--what else?--Nazi zombies!

According a local, who drops in to insult their coffee and tell a story, a group of 300 vicious Nazis were stationed at a nearby village. When the war was lost, the Nazis stole all the inhabitants' valuables. The villagers, in turn, chased them into the mountains and it was assumed that the 300 died from exposure.

This film is gross, I won't lie. Actually, some of the gag-inducing behaviour comes from the students, rather than the monsters. There's a scene in an outhouse that made everyone in the theatre scream, "Eeeeew!" simultaneously.

I was really surprised that a Norwegian film company would make an American style campy horror picture, but there you go. I was equally surprised to receive this film as an early Christmas present. :-)

2.0 out of 5 stars Too slow and predictable, Feb 20 2011

The best thing about this movie were a couple of actresses, who were good looking. Unfortunately the best looker gets it first. The rasta haired one should have been on top of the menu in MHO. The blood splatter doesn't start until nearly half way through which is way too long to wait for this kind of junk. And sex in an outhouse in a Norwegian winter? The zombies are remnant Germans from WW2 (you know, The Big One) and for zombies they move pretty fast at times. I got the impression that while writing out this turkey, someone walked into the room and said "Hey, Lars, why don't you make the killer a Nazi zombie?" The way the guys handle the shotgun well it's no wonder the Germans mopped up Norway; a deeper view of the movie would decry the emasculation of men these days as compared to real men in the past.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nazi zombies out for revenge..., Sep 24 2010

"Dead Snow" is a Norwegian comedy horror film, directed by Tommy Wirkola. In the film a group of medical students take a holiday in the mountains at an isolated cabin. They're meeting a friend who is traveling cross country, but she never makes it. In the hills, lying in wait, are the dead from WWII. We never really learn how these Nazis became zombies, but they're out for revenge on anyone who disturbs their burial grounds. "Dead Snow" will make you jump, and at times chuckle. It's campy fun, and the Nazis zombie's look great.
