Dead Space: Aftermath (2011) is an animated feature based on the Electronic Arts video game Dead Space. In 2509, the USG O'Bannon travels to the planet Aegis VII on a top-secret mission to find fragments of a mysterious alien structure. Only four crew members survive their trip to the volcanic surface, which looks suspiciously like the primal Earth in the "Rite of Spring" sequence in Fantasia. Scientist Nolan Stross, who seems to know the most about it, babbles that the artifact holds the key to the future of human evolution. It induces hallucinations in living humans and somehow turns cadavers into mutated zombies, as the surviving quartet reveal after being subjected to "enhanced interrogation techniques" (i.e. torture) by nasty government agents. Visually, the film seesaws between three-dimensional present actions and two-dimensional flashbacks. Neither style is used particularly skillfully, and the characters' appearances shift from scene to scene. Fans of Dead Space may enjoy the expanded vision of its world; viewers not familiar with the game will dismiss Aftermath as a mishmash of violent killings, gratuitous profanity, cheesy animation, and hokey dialogue. (Unrated; suitable for ages 17 and older: graphic violence, violence against women, grotesque imagery, profanity, nudity, torture, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon

3.0 out of 5 stars fun but not crazy Nov 12 2012
By Corpse
Format:DVD
meh it was an alright watch, i didnt love it but there wasnt really a whole lot about it i didnt like either. The plot is ok although it makes for quite a bit of dialogue that i found boring. It was great when they were killing aliens although it is never scary like the games are. I also liked how the shard affected people, this made the plot a lot moer interesting although i cant say that it felt origonal in any way. All in all i dont think i enjoyed it quite as much as downfall but it was still a pretty good waste of time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing Feb 22 2011
By Stefanie Beaudin TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The mooment I heard about this coming on DVD I immediately pre-ordered it without any second thoughts. I highly enjoyed the first movie as well as the game itself.

Me and my friends watched this and we couldn't get past the first graphics which are more bobbly 3D done. We found it distasteful and couldn't connect to the story too much.

The story itself was intriguing and it was a good thing that you had 4 different kind of styles in animation. You could compare it to Animatrix and Batman Gothi Knight. You have 4 survivors that the ship picked up from another ship that had 139 crewman and there's a massacre. You see it by each of their perspective which adds a bit more to the mystery and story as you go on in the movie.

Where it lacked, was the bloodshed from the first movie dvd. You don't see much necromorph action, only when the 4th and last person recounts her story (Dr Woo I think she was called). So through an entire 80 minutes of movie, you get about 5 to 10 minutes of bloodshed and bodies dropping like flies. this is in what we were disapointed.

The ending definately ensures that it followed the arrival of the Dead Space 2 game on console. Thus, Isaak comes into play. If you want the reste of the story you need to play the game, which is very nice and addictive in itself.

If you enjoyed the Dead Space Series (DVD and games) you might want to take a look at this for more information. If you know nothing of one or the other, you might want to stay clear of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good For The Gamer: More Of A Game Supplement Than A Stand Alone Film Jan 12 2011
By K. Harris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
In the latest bit of synergistic marketing, "Dead Space: Aftermath" arrives on DVD shelves on the same day that the eagerly anticipated "Dead Space 2" arrives for gaming consoles. Sound familiar? It's the same strategy that brought the original "Dead Space" game forth in conjunction with its companion piece DVD "Dead Space: Downfall." Well, who's to look success in the face and not try to replicate it? I'm a bit torn in what to say about "Dead Space: Aftermath." A perfectly acceptable adventure, by all rights, if not particularly distinguished--this will obviously appeal (or not appeal) to different people for different reasons. If you are a "Dead Space" enthusiast, then--I might rank this production at four stars for a built-in audience. If, however, you're completely unconnected with the gaming experience--I'd probably put this at closer to two stars. I also think that if you were to watch this for free, you might think it a perfectly harmless entertainment--as a game extra, it might be awesome. However, when laying down your DVD dollar, your expectation might be higher.

Enough convoluted analysis, though. Here's the story. "Dead Space: Aftermath" tells the story of spaceship USG O'Bannon. O'Bannon responds to a secret and dangerous mission to attend to a planet in distress (if you've been to "Dead Space," you'll recognize the setting). The planet, however, is extremely volatile and soon the rescue party is fleeing--but not before uncovering a strange and hallucinatory rock. Back on O'Bannon, the rock starts affecting those on the ship. Before you can say "what the heck is going on," the crew is engaged in the ultimate battle for survival. Horrible creatures start to attack just as critical characters are sinking into dementia, it's not a pretty sight! The story of "Dead Space: Aftermath" is revealed in interviews from the four survivors of the O'Bannon. But are the survivors really safe? Or are they a part of a more nefarious conspiracy? And the film's final moments tie into the upcoming "Dead Space 2."

For me, the best sequences in "Dead Space: Aftermath" involve the interrogation of the survivors. Creepy and visually inventive, these segments really stand out. However, the whole story of what transpired lacked a real freshness. I felt like I'd seen it before--and better! As someone who really enjoys a good narrative gaming experience, I'll say that the plot requirements for a game aren't necessary as stringent as they need to be for a movie. So plotting-wise, "Dead Space: Aftermath" felt a little half-baked (for my taste anyway) as a feature film. However, I will say again--some individual moments can be quite compelling. And vocal performances (especially by the survivors) are effective to very good.

The film is a collaboration of several directors. One of the more intriguing aspects of "Dead Space: Aftermath" is that each of the survivor's stories is told from a different directorial vantage point and/or a variation of animation style. Characters can look completely different depending on who's telling the story. I found this strangely distracting, at first, until I just went with it. But while I appreciated this unique approach, I don't necessarily think it enhanced the viewing experience. Overall, "Dead Space: Aftermath" is more enticing as a game supplement than as a stand alone venture. Not a disaster, by any stretch, but in the ever expanding options in the worlds of animation and anime--there are fresher choices available. KGHarris, 1/11.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead Space fans owe it to themselves to watch this. Jan 26 2013

Any huge Dead Space fan should watch this movie. Especially if you played the first and second game a lot.

This is not a cash in! (Like what Resident Evil has done to us so many times. lol)

A few important story elements to the backstory of Dead Space are revealed here! If you are obsessed with Dead Space you are going to want to at least watch this movie once! We get to see what happens to Necropmorphs should the Marker actually be destroyed.

Plus a very important character from Dead Space 2 is introduced in this movie.

My only complaint is that the computer animation is awful when compared to the animation from the first movie. I wish they just kept the movie fully animated by that guy who did the second or third animated stories.
