Book Description

Claire Malloy discovers that house-hunting can be murder—literally—in the latest entry in Joan Hess's "wildly entertaining series." (Mystery Scene)

Back from her somewhat unusual honeymoon, Claire Malloy must face the harsh reality of life with her new husband, police chief Peter Rosen, and her teenage daughter Caron—three people simply can’t fit into her cosy two bedroom apartment. After a week of fruitless looking, she finally finds the perfect
place—a well preserved large house on a large plot of land in an area called Hollow Valley. There are only a few problems. Such as the real estate agent disappeared mid-showing and hasn’t been seen since. And the last owner died in circumstances labeled ’accidental’ but were actually both ’mysterious’ and ’dubious’. The family that owned the estate is now suing the lover of the dead owner over the rights to the property. Oh, and it isn’t really for sale. When the previous owner’s lover dies practically at her feet, Claire decides to take matters into her own hands. After all, to get the house of her dreams, first she has to find a killer. And all’s fair in love, war, and real estate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, Feb 16 2012

Well I am always anxiously awaiting the new works of my favorite authors and I love Claire Malloy mysteries. It was worth the wait. She really roped me into this one quick. Starts out just like a house search but then she falls into a mystery and more and more odd circumstances. Naturally she cannot help but try to figure it out as she thinks it will help them get the house they want. I was surprised by a couple of events and she kept me guessing to the very end which was very satisfactory. I really enjoy the fact that her daughter and friend Inez are old enough to really be of great assistance and how they help a young girl in the story. Claire gets herself into sticky situations but somehow manages to get herself out. I also really like the way her new marriage is worked into the mystery too. It seems realistic not just as a sideline. Overall excellent and I will reread it again soon. More please!!! :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Just too boring, Mar 15 2012

I have read all of Joan Hess's books and this is the first time I have been truly bored with her main character. What on earth did you do to Claire Malloy? And why?????

I only got half way through it and just coudln't take it any more. I put it away for three days and went back to it. Just as bad as I remembered.

I knew Claire was a whiner and as self-centered as her daughter, but she never got off the one note whine the whole half I put up with.

What a real shame. This is the last Joan Hess book on which I will waste money.

She is unfortunately going the way of Jill Churchill.

I am just not so thrilled about these recent entries in the Claire Malloy series. In this, Claire is recently married and in search of a larger domicile for her, new husband (and deputy chief) Peter Rosen, and daughter Caron. Claire falls in love with a house in a secluded valley inhabited by a nutty extended family, the Hollows. But before she can put an offer down, her real estate agent disappears.

The rest of the book involves a twisted and turning plot and various revelations. This has to be the most confusing and, at the same time, easiest to figure out "whodunnit" mystery I've read in a long time. Unfortunately, I think Claire should hang up her PI shoes and enjoy her newlywed status.

Don't bother with this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, Mar 11 2012
By Felicia - Published on Amazon.com

I've always enjoyed the Claire Malloy series, more so than the Maggody which can be a little too silly. I don't have a problem with the ideology, which seems to be what people are complaining about but this is dull. It could have used a good editor and been a better book in half the length. Claire is extremely slow to catch on to the smuggling and does the old "no one else left" to find the murderer. I won't bother getting the next one, if there is one. Maybe it's just the difficulty of keeping the series interesting once the romance is settled. Jill Churchill, a real favorite of mine, started to go downhill after the romance was settled. Frustrating.
