Life Away from the Crusades can be as Deadly..., Mar 27 2010
By A. Lee - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Deadly Inheritance (Hardcover)
In 1103, Sir Geoffrey, a crusader knight who has a talent for unraveling mysteries, finds himself with a number of them to deal with when he comes into his inheritance of Goodrich Castle. His older brother, Henry, had been murdered and no one is eager to find out who it was since Henry was universally hated. There are ambitious neighbors vying for power along with the nearby Welsh, and Geoffrey is told it is imperative that he marry one of their daughters to ensure some stability and have heirs as quickly as possible. Plus, Geoffrey's good friend, Bishop Gifford, asks him to look into the death of the Duchess of Normandy because he suspects his nephew and sister-in-law may have poisoned her. And then more murders occur.
Geoffrey thought that life in the country would be dull compared to battles in the Holy Land and elsewhere, but he couldn't be more wrong. He's also been trying to avoid coming under the thumb of his King, Henry I, but the King is also on the scene and is most insistent that Geoffrey will do his bidding.
There truly is no let-up in the pace and action, even if there are times when Geoffrey is able to do mundane things, such as exercising his war horse. The politics, both local between the various powers and with the Welsh border, and between knights and Kings and Dukes, all add to the interest of the historical setting. The little details are worked in well and evoke the period nicely. The mysteries are all interesting and made more complex by various factors that are continuing in the present, and also are wound up with Geoffrey's personal life.
I was pleased with this book and will definitely be looking for more in this series.

Deadly Inheritance by Simon Beaufort, Feb 24 2010

I realy enjoyed reading this story. It moves along at a rapid pace, it keeps you from putting the book down. That said I was less than pleased with what was a new book. The corners on front and back covers were dogeared, which I noticed only after unwrapping it.
