Product Description

Charlotte struggles to find her twin brother after the rest of her family is killed in the tragic Halifax explosion. No Safe Harbour is set in the months before and after the December 6, 1917 Halifax explosion, which was the largest man-made blast in history until the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The explosion levelled most of the city and sent shards of glass and burning debris flying for miles. It left thousands dead, blinded or homeless. Suddenly orphaned, Charlotte turns to her diary to help her cope with the events that killed her entire family -- leaving her older brother, still fighting in the trenches of WWI, as her only surviving relative. This is an affecting story of loss and recovery, powerfully told by award-winning author Julie Lawson.

About the Author

Julie LawsonÂ’s own grandfather was hospitalized in Halifax at the time of the explosion. He recalled the nurses running so quickly to tend to the wounded, "you could see their ankles" - a rare thing in 1917. Lawson is the award-winning author of Dear Canada: A Ribbon of Shining Steel, as well as many other picture books and novels for children. Her best known are White Jade Tiger, Fires Burning, A Morning to Polish and Keep, KateÂ’s Castle and Too Many Suns, as well as the Scholastic picture book, Whatever You Do, DonÂ’t Go Near That Canoe!

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
No Safe Harbor: The Halifax Explosion Diary of Charlotte Blackburn by Julie Lawson is an excellent addition the great Dear Canada historical fiction book series.

Charlotte Blackburn lives in the northern part of the city Halifax in 1917 with her parents, older sisters Ruth and Edith, her twin brother Duncan, and their dog, Kirsty. Charlotte's older brother Luke is fighting overseas in France during World War I. Charlotte describes to her diary her relatively normal life, worrying about her brother, until the day becomes Thursday, December 6, 1917. A burning ship, the "Mont-Blanc," ramming into another ship, the "Imo," causes a massive explosion, completely destroying the northern half on Halifax, killing 2000 people. The black ball of smoke could be seen from over a hundred miles away. Charlotte, not as injured as other people, begins her desperate search---after being released from a crowded hospital---to find Duncan, after the rest of her family is killed.

This entry in Dear Canada has now easily become one of my most favorites in the series. Charlotte's story is heart-wrenching, saddening, and tear-jerking. But it is also uplifting. Julie Lawson beautifully narrates the sad story of the Halifax Explosion of 1917, and brings it to life in this wonderfully well-written story of an innocent young girl.

Highly recommended!
